Cylinder Trouble,Blackhawk .30cal

I have a Ruger Blackhawk, 30 cal, 7.5 barrel. I first took it to the range and had a shell casing get caught in one of the cylinders. I took a stick and hit it and the casing fell out, shot another cylinder full and same thing happened. The third and subsuquent times firing it didn't have a stuck shell. I cleaned the gun and installed a new Hogue grip and put the gun away. Guess it has been about 2 months since I shot it. I took it out Sunday and the first two cylinders full I had a stuck shell but by the third cyclinder full the shells stop sticking. Anyone know what the problem might be?

    What and How are You cleaning this Gun with...? Not that this is the problem....but it is a place to begin..........

    Sounds like you may have a rough chamber in that cylinder. I would have a gun smith take a look and maybe polish it a bit to knock down any roughness left in the holes.

    I have an older model .30 carbine Ruger Blackhawk that had one of the holes not drilled deep enough at the factory. No matter how hard I tried it would not chamber ammo in one of the chambers. After re-drilling that chamber, it worked just fine. Since that caliber headspaces on the front of the case, the chamber depth is critical.

    Ruger is great about correcting problems with their guns at no cost. I would suggest contacting them or a competent gun smith.

    I agree with Laredo Lefty...Ship it back to Ruger and let them correct the problem...

    This only happens for the first two cylinder loads fired, the third and subsequent are fine. I clean it after every firing with solvent, brush, bore swab, cleaning patches till no residue, then I use spray gun oil, Remington. But you would think that if it was a chamber on the cylinder then why doesn't it stick after the third load?? Like I say it is only the first two loaded cylinder but after that they come out of the cylinder fine with the plunger. It has me confused, could it be the oil I use after a good cleaning? Or maybe not enough oil? I try to just leave a light coat on the bore and cylinder holes. Got me, any suggestions?

    try cleaning the chambers with Hoppe's # 9 followed by clean patch until the chambers are dry them take it out and shoot it and see what happens ,, if its the oil in the chambers that is the problem , shooting it with nice clean dry chambers should tell you

    I have seen several Ruger revolvers that would have one chamber with a burr at rear of chamber. Might take a magnifying glass and inspect the cylinder that is giving trouble.
    I polished mine out with a fired case coated with fine valve grinding compound in a drill. Keep it moving back and forth so as to not leave circular scratches in chamber. Actually I drilled out the primer area and tapped it for a rod to chuck in drill

    Sounds to me like the cylinder has one or more "tight" chambers, and after heating slightly by firing a string of shots or two; is then "normal" sized.
    I had a similar problem until I carefully hand-lapped the 2 offending chambers with a fired case and some J-B Bore Paste; just twist a casing coated lightly with paste in the tightest chambers for a little while, and try a clean, fired case for fit (one that stuck earlier). It's easy, and a good way to start learning how to keep 'em running.

    I want to thank all that gave me good advice with the shell that sticks, didn't think about the walls getting warm and expanding, didn't think about using valve grinding compound to polish the cyclinder wall. Thanks guys, I will try all ideas and might even send it back to ruger. Great site with Great information.
