Deciphering Remington's Serilization -revisited
Bert, the 20ga Standard was discontinued around 77, but the barrels have that long tang like this one. One of the two, LT or LW has a long tang also but won't fit the STD. If you think it's a 84 then it's not the one I want, I was just confused with the 4 letter code.

You were not the only one confused by seeing those four letters stamped on that barrel[:0]. If it were me, I would call Remington and ask them what it means when four letters are stamped for in the date code location.

. Usually the first 2 letters are all that's needed, additional letters or symbols were inspectors stamps and ID numbers
Remington Owners,
Remington Year of Manufacture Codes may be found on the barrel of your Remington rifle [or shotgun] on the left side, just forward of the receiver; the first letter of the Code is the month of manufacture, followed by one or two letters which are the year of manufacture. For shotguns with removeable barrels, the code will be valid for the manufacture of the barrel; maybe for the receiver, as barrels do get switched around.
According to the "Blue Book of Gun Values", the coding continues as follows:

Example. I used to have a remington 550-1 with the code "XB" since the 550-1 was produced from the early 41 through late 70 i believe That placed it Dec. of 1955
* the years 1943 though 1953 had double letters: ie, MM = 1943
As maybe seen, the year code letters duplicate; some knowledge of when the model was introduced should resolve the actual year of manufacture.
