refresh my pre-ban memory

Am I loosing some brain connections ?
If a Norinco MAK 90 was pre-ban, why would it have a thumbhole stock ?

I thought the thumbhole was a 'loophole' to get around some of the ban language.

  I believe it was banned in 1989 and therefore the MAK 90, reflects the changes in the year 1990. The "ban" you might be thinking of that expired was from 1994. The 89 ban is still in effect.

  The thumb-hole stock was not related to the 1994 "semi automatic assault weapons" ban. It was required by BATF to meet their "sporting purposes" requirement for imported firearms.

  The MAK-90 stands for Modified AK-1990. They were Modified to meet the import requirements of the 1989 ban. The 1994 ban that just ended only covered domestic (made in USA) firearm. The 1989 ban delt with imported "Non-sporting" firearms.

  So the answer is ...
  
  If you have a thumbhole stock, it cannot be pre-ban...
  It could not be pre 1990 ban, since the thumbhole stock evolved from it.
  
  It could not be the 1994 ban, since it did not directly apply...(but there was some good money to be made right before 'sundown').
  
  So the seller is shoveling cookies to the same bunch I met before 'sundown'.
