Unusual revolver shots 410 shells
When to a gun shop last night, and saw a very unusual revolver.90% sure it was made by Colt. The cylinder was at least twice as long as a typical 38 cylinder.I thought at first it was a Flare gun revolver!
I ask the gun shop owner about it. It said it was a varmit pistol made to shoot 410 shotgun shells.It was chambered to hold five shells. I was surprised how light weight it was for it's size. The barrel was the length of a snubnose. I can only imagine that with a barrel like that it would have a very short range, maybe 10 yards at best. He said that with 410 slugs it would be quite a personal defense pistol. Would a 410 slug be any more effective than a 9mm, 38/357, or 45 round?
Seemed like an oddity to me. Visually the gun would scare anyone--the size of the cylinder made it look like it shot big game cartrideges!

I'd imagine that a .410 slug coming out of such a short barrel you would have something comparable to a '45 ACP at close range.[:0] 0 -

A 410 slug out of a short barrel will have about the same energy as a 380. A 9MM will be far superior. 410 slugs only weigh about 80 grains. In a 20" barrel they will do about 1800 fps. in a 4" they should be doing about 800-1000

I'm pretty sure that Mag Research also made one at one point. It had the 10" barrel though.

I have a used Thunder Five I bought at a pawn shop about a year ago. It will NOT stabilize .45 Colt ammo. All bullets tumbled and hit the target sideways at 15 yards. On the other hand , it shoots .410 slugs beautifully into about 2-3 inch groups offhand at the same distance. It's also fun to shoot the 3" shotshells. Kick is very slight due to the weight of the gun, about like .38 specials in a snub revolver. I'm keeping mine as a curiousity and because it's fun to shoot. It also looks awesome in its nylon holster with the holster's shell loops full of ammo. I wouldn't pay full price as they are expensive, but if you find one cheap, I'd jump on it. It always gets attention whenever I shoot it or show it to anyone. Practical? No way! Nice to own and fun to shoot? Always!

saw these at a gun show 3 years ago for $179, maybe not the same brand but the same 5 shot config. I wanted 1 but couldn't justify it at the time. 0 -

Magnum research also chambers .45 long colt/.410 in their BFR series.
No, its not what you are thinking......it's 'biggest, finest revolver'
(that's what we ALL thought it was). I didn't know about the Taurus
Wipala noted. My take on the Thunder Five is tho it looks made well enough, it didn't impress me with workmanship, ect like the BF R or what it appears the Taurus is.0
