Need S&W Info.

I have a neighbor selling a gun he inherited. He would like me to look at it and make an offer. I will meet with him in a few days. I could use some help in valueing this piece as I don't want to insult my neighbor. Its a S&W mdl. 1926, 44 cal., 6"-61/2" bar., serial # S861xx, blued,he says in 90%+ condition. Any help would be appreciated.

    A pic or two would also be nice. If it is in fact a pre 24, the s prefix suggests this, and either a 4 or 5 screw model. 44 special with a 6-1/2 inch barrel and bright blue adjustable sights...600 would be an absolute steal. These guns have been selling in the 800 to 1,000 dollar range for a 90% gun and upwards of 1200 to 1500 for 98%. an unfired one will bring 2000. I have bought several of these in the past 6 months or so and I believe I may buy two more I've just come across. The book pricing for older N Frame Smiths seems to have gone out the window the last few years. It will flatten again but they are up recently.

    Thanks guys for your help. Seller has since got lots of bad info from his know nothing buddies. Gun has now been priced way over what its worth. No sense even looking at it now.

    Did you ever find out exactly what it was and what he is now asking for it...just curious.

    He claims he has identified it as a Model 1926 hand ejector 3rd model. The seller and his buddy know nothing about guns but say they ID'd it on the internet. He now wants $2000 for it or close offer. I declined. Says he doesn't need the money so has decided to hang on to it. I never did get to see the gun. Thanks everybody for your help.

    S&W made a run of 1926 revolvers in .45LC for the Georgia State Patrol but if memory serves they had 5" barrels. This was the first firearm issued to the then new GSP.

    The serial# places it in 1952. However the the 44 Hand Ejector Third Model(Post War) was manuf. 1946-1949.
    His might be a Pre 21 or Pre 24.
