Mauser C-96 Broomhandle SN#2548

I have a C-96 Mauser. The SN# is 2548, yes 2548. Proof marks on the gun are "DV" that appears on the left side of the breech, and a Crown over the letters "AV" appear on the underside of the breech. I looked up the SN# on the internet and found it to be a 1897 gun. This is a Slab side gun or "Flat side". the gun is in good to very good conition as I have been told by a gun smith. The wood grips are in very good condition with 29 grooves. The rear sight is adjustable and is numbered from 1 to 10. It has a large hole hammer.

Further info on this nice gun would be appreciated!
Also if some one could give me a ballpark price range I would greatly appreciate it!

    Well, there an easy answer and a hard answer.

    The easy answer puts the Mauser 'Broomhandle' in the 1897
    range IF that is the true SN.

    The more difficult part of the answer is that Mauser made export
    broomhandles to at least seven other countries. During '97 they
    were exporting to Turkey.

    BUT, I think you have a valuable gun. It is a 'slabside' or 'flatside' Mauser.
    They occur in the serial number range about 26,000. However, some were
    made for the Italian Navy with its own serial number range. These lack
    German proofs but have Italian proofs. Yours looks like one of those.

    I think you hit the jackpot!

    Check out the German forum over at gunboards and I think you'll have
    your answer pretty quick!

    I have a number of the broomhandles and they are wonderful guns -
    especially to shoot! Don't shoot this one, though, a slabsides like yours
    are hard to find in good condition and it's a collector's piece.

    In the books I have and have been looking through, all the proof marks are German. The "DV" and the Crown over the "AV" are German. The "DV" is what determains it was possably the Italian contract and the low SN#. The "AV" is trackable to Adam Gerhard, Motorweake, Oskau Friedrichsdorf, Sudeten Germany. I can find no proof marks what so ever that indicate anything to do with Italy. The SN# of 2548 comes back as 1897 manufacture date and in that year only 12 Mauser c-96's were sent to the Italian Navy on a trial.

    If anyone has more or better facts then me please speek up!!! I don't want to steer anyone wrong about this gun!

    I just really want to know the truth behind this gun. If it wasn't for a mistake made by a amarican officer in destroying the records at the Mauser plant in 1945 this would be a lot simpaler I bet we all agree...LOL

    There are lots of folks here who would be interested. The issue is to what degree (i.e. dollars) are they interested. Go ahead and post it here on GB with a healthy reserve but a relatively low starting price. That will give a more definitive idea of what it's worth. It will either sell or not, in which case you can either lower the reserve and try again, or consider selling it some other way. Best of luck.
