Black poweder revolver ??
Almost purchased a nice looking Black powder revolver today. I was scared away by the amount of play between the cylinder and the forcing cone. The owner pulled the clip out and turned it around locking the barrel assembli back in. Now the play was gone, but the cylinder wouldn't cycle. I decided against it and left it there. Is this play normal?
Forgive my ignorance on BP Pistols. Looked to be a replica of a New Army model. It was two tone, sported a nice engraving job and was made in Italy.

black powder revolvers require looser clearances than modern pistols because of fowling. the one colt copy i've had was the same way, you had to know how tight to install the barrel wedge. it was a brass framed 44 and a friend of mine still shoots it. i personally prefer remingtons, and have several. its hard to say with out actually handling the piece. kinda' depends on price & condition...there are scads of good repro's out there, mostly from italy.

You have to watch out for the brass framed ones. I have an older probably 1970's brass .36, and the frame is warped. Still shoots good, but I should probably get a steel frame for it.
Actually, though, the lock up should be pretty good for one of these. And play you receive should be at the nipple end of the cylinder. This is due to the "hand" turning the cylinder. You should see some forward movement of the cylinder at the half cock with it settling after wards. If the cylinder/barrel lockup is good but there is still some play between the frame and that group, then the cylinder base pin is probably loose.
On the repros you need to make sure the hammer comes all the way back because sometimes the cylinders do not align correctly with the barrel. This usually because of the tip of the hand being fouled due to the soft metals used.
If it isn't turning then either there is a piece of an old cap caught in it (somewhere) or there is something wrong with the cylinder stop.
Be that as it may, they are good shooters for the most part and a lot of fun to toy with. I think that the repros simply need a rebuilding with better internal parts. I am skeptical of newer colts also due to the mindset of manufactures and their desire for profit using cheaper sources for their parts.
There are a lot of fake "genuine colt parts" out there, they have been around forever. And don't forget that things like "genuine ford parts" are made in foreign countries.
As for the repros, some of the ones I have picked as "unfired" and etc., have had plenty of Play time done with them. So I would suggest not paying much more than 100 for one. If it has been fired at all, 75 to 100. If it looks ugly and worn, it probably is on the inside too. 50.

go wih either a rogers and spencer or a remington in .44 . . . in my experience they are the best of the common black powder revolvers.
single action star revolvers are nicebut a friend of mine has had nothing but problems with his and has reverted back to his small frame .44 remington

i personaly do not beleive that you need to carry an anti tank rifle for personal protection.
it doesn't matter how big your gun is, it's what you do with it when it counts
