free floating barrel
I noticed that a newly aquired pre 64 model 70 270 Win was glass bedded and that the front dovetail stock mount was removed so that it floats all the way back to the chamber.
Is this the way its supposed to be?

What does that mean? 0 -
That all depends on how well it shoots. Does it shoot??? If so, don't mess with it. I think most gunsmiths bed the first inch or two of the barrel and float the rest...usually a little more than just the chamber, but if it shoots well...leave it alone.

Some barrels will require a pressure point in the stock. If your's shoots, it does not...and you do not need to do anything to it. If it does not shoot well, try folding up a business card and shoving it in the end of the stock (between the barrel and the stock). If this helps, you may need a new stock...or you could bed the barrel. Hope this helps.
