Swiss K31 Carbine
Big 5 sporting goods is running a sale here in NM and selling these rifles in good condition for $79.95. I think I'll get one cause they're so cheap.
Are these decent rifles? Any problems with them? At this price would I be dumb to pass it up?

They are excellant rifles and very accurate. Many shooters report MOA out to 100 yards. Previously, I would have said a lack of ammo might be a problem, but now Wolf, Prvi, and Hornady are loading it, and if you handload, Grafs has cheap and very good brass. I say, get one.

I've never bought a rifle this old before. I will take a bore light with me to check that but I dont really know what else to look out for. Should I use common sense with this? Anything in particular to look out for?

You haven't gone down and gotten it yet???[:0] I have two and think they are some of the best standard open sighted shooting rifles I have owned or shot. They have ugly stocks, somewhat suspect looking straight pull bolts(that function beautifully) and some of the most pristine looking well fired bores you have ever seen! One of my rifles shoots MOA the other (can't tell yet if shooter[:D] had bad day) shoots 2.5 MOA.
What you are describing for price I paid for one of my rifles then had to pay to get it to me and then pay my FFL to get it from him. If you are not down there today I may suspect your dedication to the sport of shooting! Seriously, they are great rifles.
Something I must add if you plan to reload these, and at the price of ammo you should. Redding puts out a die specifically for the
K-31. Reddings P/N for a full length die is 91235. The K-31's are blown out a bit at the shoulder from the standard 7.5. Standard is .460 1.345" up from the base. K-31's are .475 at that measurement. Hornady will provide you with a die if you order it for the same price, but you need to send in empty cases and then pay shipping. Either way it is a lot better than muscling through a batch of good Graf brass for reloads( Graf works great with the right dies). Not to mention then needing to go get a stuck case removed for your brass. Again, money well spent

The 7.5 Swiss is a great round- I can get MOA from the bench. Expect the butt to look like crap- too many years of soldiers with rifle butt in snow. Expect bores to look great- 7.5 Swiss was never loaded with corrosive primers. You can get surplus ammo for $22 per 60. Bolt works like glass, even if it looks funny.[:p] Check out swissrifle.com When getting ammo, be sure it is 7.5 x 55, or 7.5 Swiss. There are other close but no cigar loads.[B)] You can even add a scout style scope at the rear sight- likely to cost you as much as the rifle. And you can't buy a rusted out 30-30 for the price you will pay for a 600 yard rifle![:)]

That's a great price! I'm buying one this week from a local shop, he's asking $119 for them which is still cheaper than buying online plus FFL transfer fees. This guy has 25 of them so I'll get to pick out a good one. Good luck with yours, cant wait to shoot mine!

Don't get one!
Get two or as many as your wallet can stand!
I have two. One I shoot in the military bolt matches where the straight pull gives the shooter an extra second on each shot in the rapid fire sections of the match.
The other is my modified 505-460 Kemp Elk -Banger. Beautiful rifles to modify and if you don't like the stock (ugly and short) , go to Boyd's online and order a semi-inletted walnut sporter (the RIA) for $56 and change.

Big 5 here had three of the K-31s, and one, though dirty, had a beautiful walnut stock. I was ready to buy, but then I looked at the bore....[:(]
