.260 vs .243

looking for a new lightweight rifle (model 7)
I already have a .308 and 30-06 thinking .243 over .260 because i like the versitility and bullet selection .

    I think the .260 Rem would have more versatility than the .243. Either would be a great choice. But, I think the .260 can do more with heavier game. you can go from 80 gr. varmint to 160 heavy game loads. The .264 cal also has a great selection of high BC bullets for long range shooting. Just my thoughts in that direction.
    However, if you wanted to add a different range of versatility you might look into one of the .25 cal's. They will all do what the .243 will only with a heavier bullet. They will also stay right up with or exceed the .264 performance-wise up to the 120 gr. bullet that they typically limit out to.

    I'm thinking I should edit my post to be a little more clear in my reasoning for choices.
    First, what would be your main use of the rifle. You say lightweight so I won't go with heavy varmint. But, do you want a 'walking varmint' or a 'one-gun-does-all?' If you are leaning towards the first I will correct my post to say the the .243 definately. If the latter, which was what I was thinking, I would go with the .260. If the heaviest game you plan to hunt is deer, the .243 works excellent for that. So it could qualify as a 'one-gun-does-all' for the weight of game you plan to hunt. My thinking was if you wanted to include elk or caribou in the mix then I would suggest the .260 as the all around. -good luck and great hunting!

    Since you already have a .308 and a 30/06 you have plenty of hard hitting loads to choose from.Therefore I would say the .243 is your best choice. It is far superior as a varmint round,I know from using both for many years. Ive killed many deer with the 6.5x55 which for all practical purposes is a twin to the .260, it is just not nearly as good for varmints as a .243.
    The 55 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip 243 bullet has 4000 FPS muzzle velocity and leaves the highly popular 22/250 behind.There is practically no recoil and it will put 3 shots in one ragged hole @ 100 yds in my 243.You can shoot the 70,85,95 and 100 gr. bullets depending on what you are hunting .If you pick the .260 you will have a great deer rifle and a fair varmint rifle but it wont give near the versatility of the .243.

    The 243 imo. I have made some fantastic shots in my Sako from coyotes, crows and ground hogs. Very good round for those...nambu

    Only downside to the .243 is that you own a .308. My son and I used to hunt deer, him with my .243 and me with the .308. Then one day I got to thinking -- a .243 mistakenly loaded into the .308 in the heat of reloading might not be such a good thing and a very plugged bbl could happen if the .308 mistakenly got loaded into the .243. Probably neither would be "dangerous" but I just did not like the "possibility" so I graduated him to a .308 and sold the .243.

    But that .243 was a GREAT little gun.

    I'll likely be listing a Tikka .243 I have in the not too distant future. I've heard positive things about both the .243 round and Tikka's line of firearms, which obviously complicates the decision ever so slightly.

    Smaller diameter, same size casing. .243 is a necked down .308

    Yes, but I do not believe a .308 would ever chamber in a .243.

    It would also be impossible to get them mixed up when reloading, due to the bullet diameter. I do not see how it could ever be a problem having them both.
