I need advise on buying 223 ammo
I am going to a gunshow and will be looking for 223 ammo. I hear about Russian ammo and while it is cheap, some don't like it. Can someone give me advise on what is the best kind to buy.
I am looking at price and availability. What should I look for and how much is too much? Any info is appreciated.

well the real question is what are you going to use it in and what for. All the russian stuff is cheap and laquer (or however you spell it) coated and when fired will gum up your chamber with repeated firing. I think the best overall buys for cheap target ammo is remington umc 55 grain fmj's bought at walmart for 3.97 a box for 20 rnds or winchester 40 rnd packs at 7.78 a box. I consider that cheap and the brass is reloadable. Not to mention the primers wont be overly hard and wont damage your firing pin with repeated use. I hope ive given you some insight on what to look for.

Dang, Cyclonus, what a change from April. If I knew how to copy prior posts to a current post, I would do this one. On a Wal Mart Question post the latter part of April, you ripped Wal Mart big time over a three day period. And now, YOU RECOMMEND TO BUY AMMO THERE. Unbelievable. If I was as adamantly opposed to a business as you let on, I would certainly not purchase anything there, let alone recommend someone else buy there. Of course, I've got to ask the question, "What happened for you to change your mind?"

i suggest getting some lake city US stuff if you are using an ar. umc is good as well as the winchester. pmc also makes reasonably priced quality stuff.

I like the stuff mentioned already and will add S&B ammo. It shots well and is about the same price or less.
Get the job done and come home safe guys.

sellier and bellot is good stuff. I have no problems with Wolf ammo,..but I clean my chambers as well as my barrels, so laquer build-up should not be an issue in mine. The russiin stuff shoots well too. remember, no cheap ammo will shoot like match ammo,..you get what you pay for. plinking ammo is just for that,...plinking.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

forgot some of the best stuff, Black Hills Ammo. maybe a little more pricey than what you are wanting, but the accuracy is very good. they sell here for $22 per 50.

The best deal would be the military surplus .223 floating around. I hear the radway green stuff (Made in UK), which comes on stripper clips in bandoliers, is high quality. Much cheaper than buying new production ammo, but I dont think its reloadable.

Two ways to go with this, one) are you looking for cheap ammo to blast with?, or, two) are you looking for low priced volume ammo that you can accurately shoot way out there.
The first, I would recommend Mil-surp, then White box Win(USA),PMC, UMC, S&B(basically de-milled milsurp). Wolf is okay except that it is really dirty and you need to periodically clean the laquer out of your chamber. One poster said DO NOT use Olymic. I have had no problems with their 8mm but have not shot their .223.
For the second, definately Black Hills. S&B puts out some better stuff than their de-milled stuff also. They still run cheaper per round even when buying match stuff than do the bigger names.
If you really get serious and want both take up reloading. It is the most cost effective way of shooting a lot. That's my $.02.

TSAVO303 Why do you not recommend Olympic? Any specific reasons? It is the cheapest I can find around here except for the Russian stuff on-line.
