Is the M1941 Johnson limited to mil-surplus ammo? Current manufacture
30-06 damaged the op rod of my Garand; excessive gas pressure.

If you stick to standard factory loadings and not factory bumped up loads, I don't see why it would damage your op rod unless it was a bad round from the mfg, in which case I'd take it up with the ammo mfg. I don't see why the M1941 johnson couldn't shoot what the garand does.

It has been a few years, American Eagle FMJ, I believe, but the
cam on the bolt mushroomed the follower track in the op rod. A local
gunsmith told me that I should stick to mil-spec rounds to avoid
overpressure. Since converted to mil-surplus rounds, have put
1500+ through the Garand without a problem.

The Johnson is recoil operated not gas operated. Stick to military equivalent loadings and you should be OK. 0 -
If memory serves me correctly, the Johnson is a spring gun, not a gas gun. 125gr to 165gr ought to be okay.
I used to shoot military surplus and commercial just fine.0 -
