French Army Officers Pistol?

I just purchased an 8mm pistol possibly from WWI. The only markings
on it are "St Etienne" in scroll on right side of frame. Can't find a serial or any other number on it. Does anyone have any history on this piece? It's in excellent condition, somebody had it stashed away for a while.

  A picture would probably help more than a cursory description.
