Win. 94 short rifle

What is the correct measurment of the barrel on a Winchester 94 short rifle? I am looking at one that a friend has for sale, however neither of us are 100% sure that it is not a regular rifle that has been cut down. So what should the barrel measure from the end of the muzzel to the forward end of the receiver? This rifle is 38-55 and has a 1/2 magazine. Thanks Steve

    Hello Steve...

    Measuring from the muzzle to the receiver is not the correct way to measure the barrel length, and even if you measure the barrel length correctly (from the breech face of the barrel), that will not necessarily tell you if the barrel is original length. I have seen correct Model 1894/94 Short Sporting Rifles with 18-inch, 19-inch, 20-inch, 21-inch, 22-inch, 23-inch, and 24-inch length barrels.

    The best method of detecting a cut-down barrel, is to measure the precise distance from the muzzle to the center of the front sight dovetail slot (it must be exactly 15/16-inch). The next measurement to check is the exact distance from the muzzle to the magazine tube retaining ring (it is 3+ inches... I will have to look through my notes later this evening for the exact dimension). Finally, the barrel length should be +/- 1/8 inch of the full inch length (e.g. for an 18-inch barrel, it should be 17-7/8 - 18-1/8 inches).

    The correct distance from the muzzle to the forward edge of the magazine retaining ring on a non Takedown Sporting Rifle is 3-1/2 - 3-3/4 inches. One other thing I forgot to mention when checking a Winchester barrel for originality... the muzzle must be perfectly flat & square. Winchester never crowned the barrels on any of their Sporting Rifles.

    With the half-magazine he says there is on the rifle, there shouldn't be any magazine retaining ring at all so the measurement is of no point.
