Recomend a Good Scope for me.....
I have a Howa 1500 30-06, brand new. I want a really good scope for this rifle and also if I get a better rifle in the future. There is a range close to my house where you can shoot out to 1000 yards. They have competitions regularly but for now I just want to have fun and get better. I am willing to spend about $600 on a scope, maybe slightly more if it is REALLy good. What do you guys recomend ?

Scope theroy runs in a couple of different schools. One is about hunting and your ideas about that. Another is target theory. For a target scope higher magnification, 9x 10x 12x 14x 20x, can all be useful on the right rifle. Target scopes are generally larger, heavier and have adjustable objectives and sometime other features to play with. A 30-06 with heavy slugs can be a long range target rifle, but to be any real good at extended ranges you will almost have to dedicate it to that. A hunting scope is best when kept simple, I use the 2-7x33 Leupold VX-II on several of my hunting rifles. It is very light, compact and give great field shooting performance for out to 250yds on deer size game. But it sounds like you are looking for a compromise scope. The suggestion of a Leupold 3.5-10 VariIII is a good one. I'd suggest the 40mm not the 50mm as it will let you mount the scope closer to the axis of the rifles bore. 50mm scopes are a real asset for shooting in low light conditions, as they will admit more light to me used. But under normal hunting and target situations they make it so that you have to crane your head to get on them and this makes a good cheek weld harder to achieve. Having your head in the same spot each and every shot is one key to accurate shooting. With a non custom stock this is usually easier to get with a lower mounted scope. Good luck...... 0 -

On my 30-06 , I use a Nikon 3-9x40 . Also have Leupolds in 3-9x40 aswell, good info already posted and as stated if you ask 10 people you'll get different answers. I personally like the 3-9x40 on the particular gun, had a 4-12 Leupold but switched back to the 3-9. 0 -
Look into the scopes the benchrest use. There are nightforce and a couple of others that tend to get modified to work correctly. You will not be shooting 1,000 yards with a nine power scope.
You can not go wrong with your rifle having a Burris or leupold scope on it. After much trial and tribulation with mounting scopes I now agree with Mr Bruce and some other gun smiths on this forum that the burris Signature rings are fantastic.
Either scope in that price range will make you a happy shooter.0 -
Buy a used Leupold Vari-x II or III in 3-9x40. It has an unconditional Lifetime Warranty so no worries. Buying used should save about half of retail prices. Better yet, do as I did and buy a used gun with a Leupold scope, take the scope off and re-sell the rifle for close to what you paid for the combination. I have $25 in one Leupold and $50 in another, and a Classic Weaver 3-9x50 cost me nothing after I resold the rifle. I have two Redfields obtained the same way. I own a Howa 1500 with walnut stock, blued barrel, and iron sights. It came with a Nichols scope that is no longer sold. I love the Howa and will probably replace the scope someday with a Leupold. I believe you will like your Howa. They are realy nice and shoot great, too. You are smart to buy a really good scope. It will help your Howa to really shine at the range and in the field. First off,..If you truley wish to persue 1000yds (which I would recommend that feeling to anyone) then keep in mind you will most likely need a 20MOA base to get the elevation you need in order to not push the scope internals to their max adjustment range where they can become unpredictable.
As far as a scope,..in that price range I would be looking at something at least 24x and up. The higher quality the glass, the better off you are in the "long" run (all pun intended). The leupold vari-x or vx or whatever they are currently calling it, III would be the minimum I would go with. If possible I would go for the MK IV M1 with 30MM tube. These can be found at just a little over your $600 range, and in 90% condition.
If you plan to upgrade your rifle in the future, then the absolute best glass you can lay your hands on is your best investment. Rilfes lose much more value than scopes like the leupy MK IV and the Nightforce NXS and the vx III's with target turrets and side focus. Also,..look at the IOR Valdada (extremely good glass)
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
