Winchester 1906
First, I am new to this site and think itsgreat! Second, I am impressed by the knowledgeof most of the members. My question: my son owns a win. mod.1906 ser#171xx in .22 short only, that is in good condition, with the exception of the bore that is in poor shape. Can you tell me when it was made and approx. value? will having the barrel relined detract from its value? thanks in advance.

I have a Winchester model 1906. I tried to search the serial # and can not find anything. The web sight I found says that it is out of their database date range. The serial # is 771XXX. Does anyone have any info on this?
Thanks,

If you have access to Schwing's book Winchester Slide Action Rifles Volume 1 Model 1890 and 1906, on page 289 it explains that after serial # 685,999 the model 1906 shared #s with the 1890s after 1926. The letter "B" was dropped from the serial #s then. There were no 06s #rd between 686,000 to 736,468 serial range, those numbers were reserved for the 90s.. Between 736,468 and approximately 854,000 model 06s and 90s were mixed together, with the majority being 06s.
Hope this helps, and welcome to the forums.
So your rifle would fall between 1926 and 1934, probably closer to 1934. Congratulations on finding a nice 06, they are harder to find than good 90s.
