1864 Fayetteville Value?

Dad has an 1864 Fayetteville and we're wondering what it's worth might be. I've seen several auctioned on the web ranging from $7k to $30k depending upon condition. Any opinions? Where's the best place to sell this gun? At Auction?

    Not my area of interest, but I'd observe that certain brass fixtures have either been replaced or agressively cleaned. If correct, then it bodes poorly for overall value.

    JBW and others are almost certain to comment. I'll be interested in what they have to say.

    It would be worth quite a bit except:

    The wood has been cut down to carbine style.

    Can't tell from the pics if the barrel has been cut also. The standard length was 33". Is the bayonet lug still present ?

    It has been cleaned quite a bit, scratching the brass.

    No ramrod, sling swivels removed.

    The "patchbox" or brass disc (hard to tell it's function) is likely an add-on. The ones made with patchboxes were on the opposite side.

    Just some additional info, this would fall into the "Type IV" range for Fayetteville Armory pieces.

    I doubt that it would bring anywhere near the $7k range in it's condition. Where are you located ?

    Gun was coated in several layers of black paint. It was cleaned aggressively. As far as we know, all parts are original. One point I missed in photographing is the fact the ring around the barrel that held the ramming rod in place is missing.

    Location is Mossyrock Washington. About halfway between Seattle and Portland.

    Again, not my area of interest but you set off an alarm when black paint was mentioned.

    Somewhere in the past this subject came up. I don't happen to remember whether a Fayetteville gun or something else, but the value was ruined because the paint was absolutely correct and should never have been touched.

    All other facts aside... NEVER AGRESSIVELY CLEAN AN OLD GUN. Better to leave it as is for better or worse.

    Here's to hoping that the worst outcome is that you cleaned up a nearly worthless gun and did no great harm to anyone. This is the one time I can remember actually rooting for a nearly valueless piece versus a hidden treasure.

    If you want a truly expert appraisal done, there is a guy in Middleburg, Va. named David Condon. He has a website at DavidCondon(dot.com) withouth the parentheses. His qualifications are pretty much impeccable, and I've used him for all my high-end stuff. The appraisal fee generally runs $250.00 or so. I bit pricey, but he is one of the best.

    I agree with Nord, that the cleaning job, as well as the cutting on this piece has seriously killed what value it had. Still, it's a Fayetteville, and the markings are readable, so someone (myself included) would pay a few $$ just on that alone.
