Remington or Weatherby
I am looking to buy either a new Remington 700 SPS or a Weatherby Vanguard (both in .308). I know that Remingtons are top notch, but how do they compare to the Vanguard when it comes to accuracy, barreling, and the action? Some people say the Vanguard isn't a "real" Weatherby, but it looks great to me. Any imput would be appreciated. Thanks

I have owned a Vangard for many years. It is a good, reliable gun that I killed a lot of game with. However, it never lived up to, at least my expectations. I like a gun that can shoot---the Vangard was not it. Although I do know they just re-worked the model and supposedly brought it up to "snuff". I can't really comment whether they did or didn't. If it were my money, and I put a lot of it toward guns, I'd buy my 5th Remington. 0 -
Comparing a Weatherby Vanguard to a Model 700 is not fair...........
to the Vanguard.
The newer Vanguards are supposed to be pretty decent, but MY money would still go towards a Remington Model 700.
I DO NOT own a Vanguard, but I DO own a Weatherby Accu-Mark and a Model 700, for what it's worth, that's MY opinion.0 -
In the smaller cals-.308 I would buy the Rem
The vanguard Action is not the same as the WBY Mark V
fewer locking lugs
In mag Cal I would Buy the Mark V 300wby mag

the remington has the abundance of aftermarket parts and gunsmith knowledge going for it. I am not an avid wthby user so my opinion may also be quite skewed, but I like the simplicity and accuracy out of the box that the 700 action delivers. I only have 1 wthby MK V action,..and it wears a remington barrel[:D]
The stock you get on that remington is not the best,..so adding a better handle in the future would be something I would consider.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

WEATHERBY VANGUARD=HOWA 1500=S&W 1500=& PROBABLY A FEW OTHERS. THIS LADY HAS HAD MANY NAMES, STILL A GOOD OLD GIRL. A GOOD RIFLE FOR THE MONEY, BUT IT'S NOT A MK-5 OR A 700. 0 -
I have owned one vanguard , and 2 of the smith and wesson model 1500's and a howa...they were fine for biggame hunting,but i no longer own any and wouldnt particularily be interested in purchasing another ...i have owned probably 50 remington 700's and still have 1/2 dozen in my collection...they are VERY,VERY hard to beat considering a nice used one can often be picked up for in $400 range, and if it wont shoot (which is very unlikely) you can recover your money and try again...my experience has been that almost all can be brought to under an inch with minimal fuss and not uncommon to get 1/4-1/2 performance with alittle diligence...goodluck on your decision ! 0 -
Thanks guys.. you've all been really helpful. This morning I ordered the Remington in .308 from Gilbert's Guns. I'm going to have the trigger worked on as soon as I get it in, and bring it down to about 3 pounds. Can't wait to get that done, I'M MISSING WHITETAIL SEASON! 0
