springfield ultra comact
i have been looking into getting a concealed carry piece
i have deceided on one of the 1911 style compacts in .45acp but i am not sure which one to get.
i ave been looking at the Springfield armory models sinse i already have experience with SA and am happy with there guns.
i am loking at the ultra compact (3.5" non ramped barrel) in particular. is this one any better or worse than the more expensive micro-compact(3" ramped, fuly supportedd barrel)
how does the slightly larger barrel compare to the smaller model with regaurds to accuracy, reliability, and concealability

i personaly do not beleive that you need to carry an anti tank rifle for personal protection.

I have one of each, as far as comparison the only difference is actually the ?", as far as accuracy it just gives you a little better sight radius, and would depend on the shooter
Of course I did a bit of work on it, trigger job, throated the barrel, and changed the sights0 -
I'm not sure if this will help. I've got a springfield V 10 Ultra Compact. A great deal from CDNN about a year ago. It's a ramped barrel, Shoots much better than I expected. Only 200 rounds of 230 gr ball thru it so far and no complaints with function. But I feel it's heavy, That's my paramount impression.
I've got a Kimber cdp with that holds more rounds and the barrel is longer and is lighter than the springfield. I mention this as your looking for Ccw.
If your looking a V model with the ports, be prepaired for some flames when firing.0 -
Mr_Flopy, i am looking at the V10 ultra compact in particular.
the fact that the UC's barrel is not ramped does not have a major impact on it's performance.
the kimber you mention . . is that a full size?

Here's a shot for comparison.
Standard sized colt gold cup 5"barrel.
Kimber cdp 4" barrel
Springfield Ultra compact 3 1/2 " barrel
As for ccw if my state ever convirts, I'd probaly go with the Kimber. I decided to edit my post here and give others room for opinions here as the Ask the Experts forum will lock the subject after 10 posts.
I can't be sure on the weights, but for its smaller size the springfield I thought it would be the lighest, Guessing it feels simular in weight to the fullsized colt. The kimber is the lighest for sure and as for the accuracy, it would qualify for my requirements with CCW. I've read lots of posts with people looking for smaller 45's to carry in the summer. The major complaint is weight with 45's.
The Springfield Does shoot very well for me, and is a very solid feeling piece. I'm pleased with all three guns. The kimber just wins in the race with an all around average over the others.0 -
the size isn't bad. how are they for concealability and price

I checked out the Springfields but decided to go with a Kimber Ultra Carry instead. The accuracy is exceptional and I love the gun so far. I've got about 600 rds through it and it had one problem with a UMC casing but that is it. I am not knocking Springfield though, I own some and they are awesome but in the compact I like the Kimber. 0 -

I own an ultra compact without porting. Have about 1000 rounds through it with not one problem. I do agree it's on the heavy side though, carry mine arond our farm, would be a burden if I had to carry it all day every day. I'd go for a lighter piece, as suggested. Good luck! 0 -
how mutch lighter is the ultra compact. it is a little bit on the pricey side but . . . .
the kimbers are nice to but again they are at least 800$
