How well do the older P38s and newer P1s hold up to this hot ammo?

No not reccomended. It will beat the alloy frame to hell. Unless you have one of the rare postwar steel framed ones I wouldnt try it at all. The P1s with teh steel stud would hold up better but it just wasnt designed for that type of punishment. 0 -
The original WWII German 9mm Parabellum service ammunition was in the +P to +P+ range. The Post WWII West German Police and Military ammunition would be in the +P range. While it is true that the alloy framed P1 guns might have a bit longer life shooting only mild US FMJ ammunition, their standard service ammunition was in the +P range. Personally, I'd avoid +P+ in a P1 except for occasional use - like as defense ammo after you have run SOME thru your gun to make certain it will feed ok. The P38/P1 are not the most reliable guns with modern hollow point (shorter than normal ball) ammo. Cor-Bon Power-ball might be something to try.... 0 -
What Lazarus40 said. The WWII German military only issued one 9mm loading for use in both subguns and handguns. It was pretty hot stuff.
Before feeding it a steady diet of this stuff I'd replace the gun's unknown mileage recoil springs with factory fresh ones. It can handle it, but needs to be within spec.0
