.17 vs .22

Just for the sake of asking what is the main differences between the .17 and the .22 LR and could the .17 one day take over the market?

    Assume you are asking about the 17M2 rimfire -vs- the 22lr

    Lighter bullet, higher velocity for the 17M2 means a flatter shooting trajectory. Bullet performance wise the 17's (M2 or HMR) bullet is impressive as heck. 50 yards and in, for squirrel, rabbit, crows, etc. sized critters the 17M2 out performs the 22lr. But both get the job done.

    Will the 17M2 surpass the 22lr maket share ... I doubt it. The 22 has been around for over 100 years and there is a place for both cal.

    This is the third love affair the public has had with the .17 caliber. Is there any reason to believe it will end any differently? Not in my book. It will join the 10 gauge, the 10mm, and the .357 Sig on the dusty shelf.

    Penny to SkyKing...357Sig is alive and well and living in ICE/Border Patrol issue weapons.

    I wouldn't try winning any matches with a .224 dia. barrel on my Single six whilst shooting .17cal. anythings through it.

    They will switch to .40 S&W one day and eventually the cops and military will carry the same caliber, whatever that may be.
