Mauser Model 1908?

I am not a Mauser authority at all. I picked up a Mauser today from a man who said it is an Argentine model. A .30 caliber bore brush is a tight fit. It was made at DWM in Germany. On the side of the receiver it is marked "Model 1908." I can't find a 1908 model in my limited library.

This rifle has a staggered box magazine that fits flush with the bottom of the stock. Argentine Mausers I have seen before have a straight-line magazine that extends below the stock.

What is it?

The one Mauser M98 version that I'm familiar with as M1908 is the Brazilian. The Argentines that are familiar are the M1891 and M1909. Here is a picture of the Brazilian M1908 from Coillectible Firearms:

I believe a few of the 1909 Argentine and Chilean Mausers were made in 7mm Mauser

According to Robert W.D. Ball, Mauser Military Rifles of the World, there was no model 1908 Argentine Mauser. However, there was a Model 1908 Brazilian rifle and a short rifle produced by DWM in 7mm with the flush magazine as pictured by the fellow above. Uruguay also had a 1908 model rifle with a flush magazine in 7mm. The only other country that I'm familiar with that had a 1908 model was Serbia, but that was a carbine rather than a rifle. Let us know when you determine what it is.

By what you are saying it sounds like a 7mm Mauser(7x57). But this sounds like a really good time to have it looked at and checked by a gunsmith to make sure! I have a Brazilian 1908 and an Argentine 1909 and they are both great rifles. Something to keep in mind is that most of the South American countries who bought Mausers did so in 7mm. The main difference with that statement was that Argentina chambered their rifles in 7.65x53 (.311 bore). Your .30 cal brush should have gone down the barrel as easily as cleaning a .308 or 30-06. Again I suggest you have it looked at first but I think you have a fine 7mm on your hands now.

The original Brazilian Mauser M1908's were chambered for the 7x57 Mauser. There have been conversions of course and to be sure, I would cast the chamber and measure to be able to compare to a chamber drawing. Best bet is it's original in the 7x57 chambering.
