colt python
How can you tell a nickle finish from an ultimate stainless finish? The bluebook lists both and I don't know which one I have. Also how can you tell the year it was made by the serial no.? Does the serial no. give any other info about the gun?

What value would you put on a mid 60's 8" Colt Python with the original box and all paperwork? The pistol has less than 30 rounds through it. It is in excellent condition. Thanks 0 -
Most of mine are 80's but I would have wanted a 1961 (the year I was born) But I guess I'll have to settle for these for now.

there is a fine "Classic test report" in G&A JUNE 93 written by Dawid W Arnold - and he actually compares an "old Python" with a 30 years "newer" one - and concludes that there is no difference in accuracy ore over-all quality.
Mine is a 4" ss - it looks, feels and shoots like a beauty!

Hi sledgehammer! The older (1960s) Royal Blue ones are more highly polished and they usually command a premium.
If you go to the General Discussion Forum, there was a tread a couple days ago, something like "show yor favorite magnum." There are a few Pythons shown, including CHGOTHNDR's and mateomasfeo has an older royal blue specimen that is very pretty
From a shooting viewpoint, I think you'll be happy with any one.0 -
Older guns without a letter prefix on the serial number are valued more by collectors. It depends what you want to use it for. Condition is more important than age. I prefer the 6" barrel for hunting or target shooting. The 4" would be better for carry. The 2 1/2" snubbys are rare and you will pay a premium for one if you can find it. The 8" barrel is also rare and a little muzzle heavy, but sweet. I saw an 8" at a gun show last month, NIB UNTURNED $1200. You should not wait too long. Colt no longer makes the Python Elite, so the prices will go up from now on. Also be sure to get a .357 Magnum, Colt made some in .38 Spl. They also made the Diamondback in .38 Spl as well as .22LR. Pythons! Man I love these little beauties! As TOMH mentioned above, I do own a Python. I am not an expert on Pythons, though I am an expert on the love of Pythons, and because of this, am arbitrarily opinionated about them.
You really need several. The older guns are obviously more desirable for collectors. The six inch barrel is generally the more desired barrel length (excepting the three inch barrel, which is very rare). The Royal Blue finish is generally the desired finish (although I've seen some georgoeus nickel ones bring rain!)
I have the "Classic" neato desireable 6" 1962 in Royal blue. It is a perfect combination of art & functionality. When I fired it, I gave up Viagra.
Trouble is, it is so beautiful, who in their right mind would dare holster the beauty, for fear of inflicting holser wear? Not I!
Yet I do want to carry the Python CCW. Feeling it within reach, all deeply polished steel, wood, and magnum firepower. All fashion and .357 fury combined!
That is why I need several Colt Pythons.
In addition to my 1962 sex goddess, I need a late model nickel (not stainless, too cold for a goddess) 4 inch barrel for CCW. The nickel would provide a little more durable finish while still providing bling and blast. The four inch barrel more suitable for concealed carry.
Also, while not a Python, the Colt Diamondback in .22 caliber with six inch barrel is on the short list. Think of the little feller as a Python in training. Purchase one however, and you will quickly find they have more than aptly matured.
I would dearly love to have a 3" blued. Very rare and a great collector piece. It would never touch holster, and would recline by the fire, sipping cognac and smoking Romeo y Juliettas, swathed in silk smoking jacket and slippers. Smiling patiently at lesser beings...
So I guess it boils down to the old saw, "buy one that fits your needs."
