Colt Python or 1911 for home defense and target
practice.
I am selling my Glock30 and want to replace with either a 1911 or a Python.

Home Defense and target couldn't be further apart from one another. Home defense you want a gun that is completely reliable and easy to use (no safety, point and shoot) so the revolver would make more sense. Now that being said, there are plenty of reliable 1911's out there but a semi-auto has safeties, possible jamming issues, etc. I personally have a S&W 686 .357 for home defense b/c at 3:00am I am not going to be at my best waking from a sound sleep if needed. For target shooting, more is better...get both guns. But whichever you choose, always practice with it. 0 -
goldeneagle76 is exactly right. There are too many things to remember with a 19ll or 1911 clone. A double action semi auto would be a better choice than the 1911 but still not as good for home defense as the double action revolver. 0 -
Buy a S&W 25-2 in .45ACP. best caliber (IMO) great accuracy, easy to shoot and makes big holes. Important in leaking both light to see hits on paper, and fluids; if God forbid that becomes necessary. 0 -

Go w/ the Python. Actual story: Had a confrontation, got hit in the hand/arm, found out I was unable to cycle the slide on my Browning with one hand afterwards. If I had needed to cycle the slide, I would not have been able to.
I know everyone thinks they will never have a problem w/ their pet semi-autos, but every shot only makes it one shot closer to having a problem.
For example, the first time ever in my life and in an IDPA match, my firing pin pierced a primer on a factory round and a piece of the primer lodged the firing pin so the next round wouldn't fire.
In this case, it wouldn't have mattered if it was a revolver or semi-auto, but stuff happens.
The fewer variables to depend on, the better the chance of success.

Go Python. Revolvers make a lot of sense, and with the Python you can shoot .357 self defense loads for protection and .38 surplus for target.

I also have to ring in on the side of the Python. Its a classic. Its a great revolver and there's nothing better than a double action revolver for reliability and safety.
The only real guns are wheel guns!0 -

Well, Jimbowby has a point with the shotgun- but for a defensive handgun, go with the revolver. Point, pull trigger hard, loud noise comes out of hole in front. Without wondering if the magazine is fully seated, did the round feed, did the slide go into battery, is the safety off, am I limp wristing it, etc etc etc. And if you have a bad round that does NOT go bang for any reason, pull the trigger again and see if the next one will work. Reliability counts for 100 points (out of 100). I mean, a working 22 revolver is a pipsqueak, but a non-working 50 cal auto is a poorly designed club. Just my opinion.[:)]
