Winchester Model 70 SA action
I would appreciate any advice on locating a Winchester Model 70 controlled feed short action, stainless or blued, for a 7mm-08 project gun. There do not seem to be any of these in Colorado, just long actions which makes some sense. Obviously finding an action only is going to be a challenge, but why is it so hard to find a complete gun with a less than perfect barrel and stock. I realize that this combination would not be attractive to the normal buyer, but they must be in someone's inventory. Thanks for your advice.

The reason you will not find many pre-64 Model 70 short actions or complete rifles in less than perfect condition in someone's inventory, is because there were not that many of them made in comparison to the long action, and because Winchester made them right to start with[^]. Nearly all of them are still in fine condition today, and those few that are not, have already been snapped up by custom rifle builders.
My advice to you, is go buy one of the brand new Model 70 7mm-08 Classic series in the short action.

Bert, I am not looking for a pre-64 action. I am just looking for a controlled feed short action as opposed to the push feed. I already have the custom barrel and stock that I want to use. I believe that you might call it reverse engineering! Thank you for the advice. 0 -

A controlled feed action is pre-64 only! In 1964, Winchester specically switched from the controlled feed to the push feed... that is how you tell the difference between pre & post 64 made Model 70s.
Now, as I said before, you can buy a brand new Classic series which purposely features the controlled round feed system.

Didn't Winchester return to the pre'64 style in 1996? I have seen what I thought were the long claw extractor on their standard configuration(classic, lightweight, featherweight) rifles in short action .243, 7mm-08, .308. The Coyote and Shadow series are crpf.

Bert may be right that it would still be easier to buy a new rifle instead of looking for a relatively new action to take apart. I will say great action though. Keep an eye out here on GB and you will see them come up for auction.

Okay, to clarify, the Win 70 classic's of today are controlled round feed. The Shadow and Coyote are CRPF(controlled round push feed) I think Ren3 is better off finding the caliber he likes unless he can find one used and not for much money. If he is set on building one he can find them using the criteria from above. There are many on this site...just not many used. -I hope I said it right that time..

I beleive the "classic" win70's are controlled round feed.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

Actually, it was 1994, but only in the "Classic" series of rifles. All other variations of the Model 70 still have the push feed style action. Both the Coyote and Black Shadow are push feed versus controlled round feed.
