question on 410 shotgun

boltaction
Picked up and old jc higgins 410 shotgun single shot boltaction can the 45 long colt be fired threw it without any problem . I know my brother had a 45 derringer that shot 410 shells in it.

    A full choke(which most .410s are), and a 45lc would probably be disastrous.

    I'm pretty sure the pressure level of the 45 LC is going to be higher than the .410 shotshell. I wouldn't do it unless the gun was specifically marked as being set up for it

    I had the same question about a year ago so I contacted the gun maker. He said "Don't do it unless it is marked for it". I am sure it is OK with some guns without chokes. Mine is a Scout M-6 22 hornet over 410. I can feel the choke in mine when running a cleaning patch down the bore.

    i saw a cool old gun at the flea mkt. marked 410/44. the guy told me it was for 44 spec. he also said that there was a smith in anderson, sc. who would set a 410 up to handle 45LC. i would assume the process would involve either reaming the choke or cutting it off...personally i wouldn't do it with out a COMPETANT gunsmith to certify it to be safe. having said that, i do own a Leinad 410/45 derringer (fine for hitting barn doors at 10 feet) and i have loaded 45LC cases with SHOT and fired them in my lil' 410 NEF Pardner, but under no circumstances would i try to fire a regular 45 cartridge in it. just too much presure...in my opinion.

    If, and only if you can fit the 45 bullet into the muzzle without having to force it at all, should you consider firing 45 LC ammo out of a .410

    The issue of the bullet hitting front end of the chamber designed for a shotshell is something you would have to take up with a competant gunsmith.

    Of course, there would be no accuracy to speak of.

    If it moves, salute it. If it doesn't move, pick it up. If you can't pick it up, paint it.

    There are modern firearms INTENDED to shoot the 45 LC and the 410 shotshell. Then there are original 410s that were NEVER intended to shoot 45s in. They MAY forgive you, and not kill you, but as Dirty Harry said- "Do you feel lucky, PUNK ?" Ref the 410/44- the original 410 was a 44XL shot cartridge, not to be confused with 44 special, 44 mag, or 44 Schlotsky. UNLESS the arm is MARKED 45 Long Colt, DON'T DO IT ! You may get away with it for a while, but I gotta tell ya, emergency rooms are such DEPRESSING places to hang out![:(][:(][:(]
