Makarov 9X18
J&G up in Prescott AZ is advertising this semi-auto pistol for $109.95 Some time ago I believe they had them for 89.95 and sold out. Is this a good addition to a gun collection/fun shooter or is it just a cheap gun being reproduced in some other country from the original manufacture? Same question on a Walther style PA63 9x18. $89.95Any buyer beware advise is greatly appreciated.

I have a E.German Makarov which I enjoy carrying on trails and for finishing off over-active halibut, but I am not satisfied with the large molded grips that came with it or the pearce rubber wrap-arounds that I purchased later. Does anyone know of a slimmer set of grips that would be better for concealed carry?

East Germans are the best, most collectible, best fit/finish.
Bulgarians seem to be the most popular, easy to find, great prices, cant go wrong.
The Polish "makarov" isnt really a makarov, it just happens to look like one, and I've heard mixed reviews on them.

My wife has a Bulgarian. The sights are difficult to get used to, but once you get the hang of it, the thing is ridiculously accurate and cheap to feed.
I've shot one other "Makarov" in 9x18. It was a real purty little FEG that was a complete piece of crap. I don't know where it was made, but it was not made well. For the money, I'd recommend a Bulgarian.

Generally, from a fit and finish standpoint they would be ranked: 1. East German, 2. Russian, 3. Bulgarian, and 4. everything else. I have a Russian IZH-70, and while it isn't finished like a Colt, it is exceptionally accurate anything you feed it. I think a competent gunsmith could slick up the trigger pretty easily. I think there is a forum somewhere that will tell you how to do it. 0 -
There are no Makarov postils from Poland. Only pistols that shoot Makarov ammo. Just as a pistol which shoots 9mm Luger isn't always a Luger, one that shoots 9x18 isn't always a Makarov. Same is true for Hungarian or Czech pistols. The only true Maks are made in Russia, East Germany (no more), Bulgaria, and China. (Possibly also North Korea, but no one knows but them.)
