30-06 loads
i took the 06 to the range today and i wasnt that impressed like i said earlier i was not too consistant the load i was shooting today was 55.7 gr of imr4350 with 150 hornady spitzers with poor groups i am going back to the drawing board i was thinking imr4064 with the same 150 gr sp or i was even thinking the 165 btsp. i strictly use the gun for deer in pa if i decide to switch to the 165 boat tail spitzer what can i expect to find out. what does the boat tail spitzer do differently then the regular spitzer? and is it a good idea to try the 165 btsp?

Looking to see if anyone has any data for reloading the 30-06 with W760 or Reloader 22...........
Going to use 155 gr Noslers and 165 gr Hornadys.......

For what its worth the '06 I use for all of my hunting can't make a decent group with anything other than 180 grain Spitzer Boat Tails. I use 56 gr. of IMR-4350 and a 180 gr. SPBT and get sub MOA groups, if I switch to 165 or 150 gr bullets my groups go to 2.5" to 3" right away. As a suggestion try 180 grain bullets before you get too frustrated, I know this may seem heavier than needed for deer but all the game that I've shot didn't complain, lots of 1 shot kills on deer antelope elk mountain goats and bighorn sheep. 0 -
My Rem 700 in 30-06 shoots more consistently with 165 gr spbt's ahead of 54.3 gr of 4350 than it did with 150 gr spbt's ahead of 47.5 gr of 4895, so I wouldn't be surprised if yours does better with the 165 spbt bullet. On the other hand my 222 Rem does better with a flat base bullet. The longer,heavier bullet and the boat tail feature give a better ballistic coefficient, but I think it really depends on what the rifle likes. Also I suggest you check for the best OAL. 0 -
I get excellent accuracy with the 165gr bullet using IMR 3031 powder in each of the 5 30-06's we have. Makes an excellent deer load and I've shot 2 moose with it. 0 -
Me and my Dad both use 165 boat tail and love them.

The Boat Tail bullet does almost nothing for bullet flight until the bullet becomes subsonic. It does make bullet seating easier when reloading. If you are using quality huning bullets either Bt or flat base styles are fine.
The 30-06 was loaded with 4895 for many years. It was the standard match loading for millions of rounds. A load of 46-48 gr of IMR4895 pushing a 150 or 165 gr bullet should group well. My rifle likes 46.3 gr pushing a 150gr bullet.

I use 54gr of IMR4350 with 180gr sp and get consistent 1" and under groups. They came apart a little at 55 and 56gr. 0 -
The boat tail bullets will create less drag than a flat base bullet will out past 300 yards.
A deer will never know the difference..............
Have you tried the Nosler 165 grain Ballistic Tip yet ?
Try it, and you just might be suprised by the accuracy........
