Universal M1 Carbine
So I've got this Universal M1 Carbine that I bought in the early 80's, I was around 14 years old.
I added a Choate folding stock five or so years later.
I added a scope mount and scope three or so years ago.
The scope mount replaced the rear site and attached at the single screw that attached the rear sight. I don't find it all that strong a mount, but I added some "lock-tight" to the screw.
I believe that from time to time the ejected rounds are striking the bottom of the scope mount.
I'm looking to add something that will deflect the spent shells before they can hit the bottom of the scope.
I can see that on the left side of the receiver, (left in shooting stance), there are four screw holes that I seem to recall a shell deflector could be attached to. They may have been for some type of scope mount, I really am not sure.
I'm looking for advise, thoughts, what have you on this issue.

I need at slide stop lever for my carbine. It is the redesigned carbines from universal. There are no GI parts on it. The lever holds the slide open. Numrich doesnt have them, and everyone else only has GI parts. Any ideas??? 0 -
GB & Ebay sells slides all the time, the sellers name is ABCLeigh. I have bought a number of M1 carbine parts from him for my Rock-Ola.

Sorry to say that the Universal carbine is not mil-spec. Some of the military carbine parts will not fit the Universal(possibly none). The Plainfield commercial carbine is mil-spec and parts will fit. I don't know where to find parts specifically for the Universal. www.e-gunparts.com

I'll keep trying e-bay and gunbroker. I did try numrich and fulton armory among several others to no avail. Looks like nobody commercially sells these. Thanks for the feedback guys. 0 -

It is worse than junk; it is dangerous junk. I would not risk my sight or my life firing one.
I suggest that you part it out to recover your f-i-l's investment. We already know that there are folks, apparently unaware of the danger of these guns, out there looking for replacement parts.

Any more suggestions on where to pick up an operating slide for a Universal M1. I have owned and shot mine regularly for a while now and this is the first problem I have had. I would love to get it going again! I have checked the places listed and they are out of stock at this time.

Can you expound as to why the gun is dangerous?
Early Universals were mil spec. Later ones were not.

The early Universial Carbine had all GI parts on them, I have one and have never had any trouble with it! Your carbine should be a double recoil spring type and you will have to wait for one to come up on E-bay, I have seen slides a number of times and the prices are not bad on the parts.
For you guys with the GIs' I've seen two that have had the slide come apart, one wasted the receiver. I own both GI and Universial!0 -
Before you go parting out your Universal because someone tells you it is dangerous, search this site, there are just as many that think it is not dangerous.
I shoot mine all the time.
