22 S, L, LR Chambers

Is the chamber of a gun marked .22 S,L,LR the same as a gun marked .22LR. Usually guns that are marked all three are tube magazines, or single shots. This leads me to beleive that the reason a gun is marked only 22LR is because the magazine won't feed the shorter cartridges properly. What I'm really wondering is if I have a gun marked 22LR can I still shoot 22Short as long as I don't mind loading one at a time?

    Yup The chamber is generally one in the same, but the mag is an issue. Marlin used to tell you in the manual the you could single load shots in their clip fed bolt 22's. Remington used the same barrels on their 510-511-512's but the 511 was for Long rifle only due to the magazine.

    It's an issue on tube feed rifles too. Some (e.g. Stevens 87A) will fire all three single shot but only feed LR semi auto from the tube.

    Mooseyard- yeah, the issue is magazine- and on autoloaders, whether they will cycle with the ammo. I have a LOVELY old remington 550-1 auto that will shoot anything from CB Longs to CCI Stingers without a hiccup. IF you soot a LOT of 22 short, do take time to scub out the chamber with a good brush and solvent- you can get a little ring of crud that can make it hard to chamber a LR. Shoot safe, often, and WEAR YA GLASSES!
