how expensive ....custom gun
how expensive/hard would it be to make a dangerous game rifle ( mauser action synthetic stock, good bbl iron sights .375rum) I was thinking of buying th compnenets and putting it together myself or if anyone knows a good custom maker ......any opinions appreciated

I am a big fan of the M98 Mauser action, but unless you are going to spring for a very expensive "Magnum" length action it may not be the best option for building a 375RUM as that is a very long cartridge. Yes they make 300wby and 375h&h versions of the M98, but those are still on standard length actions that have been jimmied to take the longer cases. There isn't much room in the box mag for longer heavier slugs. I keep thinking about building something similar. I've bought myself a Remington 1917 action for the project as it will take magnum length cases with little modification needed. The action out of a Remington model 30 would be even better, which is Remington's sporterized version of the 1917. 0 -
Purchase a CZ 550Magnum in 375H&H. Try it out in it's present caliber and if you realy think you need more, than have the chamber recut to 375RUM. BTW, Higher velocities are not a asset when it comes to DGR's, penatration is the king in that game.
Plastic stocks are for kiddie rifles, wood is where it's at on a mans gun[:D]
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -
I was lucky enough to get a Model 30 Express reciever from Numrich for $29.95, figured it was a mistake until they sent it. Had my gunsmith (you really need to have a gunsmith do this unless you are really skilled) put it together with 1917 parts, douglas barrel, bishop stock, had the whole thing tefloned and a zeiss conquest scope in 338 Win Mag. Killed a brown bear in May at 100 yards one shot and it went down dead. Got about $1600 in it but I got really lucky on parts.

I think the suggestion of looking into the CZ-550 in 375 H&H is a good starting suggestion for someone that maybe doesn't have the experience in making rifles. The initial cost is relatively low when compared to having a custom rifle made for you. If you shoot the .375 H&H and find it lacking, then go ahead and have it re-chambered to the .375 RUM. Besides, there are probably some used ones out there that are even less expensive and that could save you more money when and if you go for the conversion.
Now, if you want to embark on a journey of discovery by putting your own rifle together, there are other ways to skin that cat.
If you want to use a Classic Mauser for a Dangerous Game Rifle but don't want to have the expense of modifications to the action for chambering the longer magnum cartridges, then you need to look at other cartridges. Look outside of the average cartridges that are available to everyone, everywhere and find out what gets used in Africa. Look for cartridges that fit in the standard length Mauser but have a larger case capacity and still fit and feed through the Mauser.
1) .376 Steyr - 80.0 gr. capacity - 3.110" OAL. Up to 2600 FPS w/ 270 gr. bullet.
2) .375 Chatfield-Taylor - 87.6 gr. capacity - 3.340" OAL. Up to 2650 FPS w/ 270 gr. bullet.
3) .375 Dakota - 99.0 gr. capacity - 3.340" OAL. Up to 2725 FPS w/270 gr. bullet.
4) *9.5 x 66 SE vom Hofe* - 106.0 gr. capacity - 3.340" OAL. Up to 2850 FPS w/ 270 gr. bullet.
All of these cartridges will fit in the standard Mauser receiver with modifications limited to bolt face, slight rail fit and magazine width. They were all developed with this in mind.
My choice is the 9.5 x 66 SE vom Hofe which is nearly the same capacity as the .375 RUM but shorter. Brass is available from Huntingtons and RWS through Natchez Shooting Supply. I get mine through Dieter Horneber in Germany. I would call Woody Woodall at Lothar Walther in Georgia and have him make the barrel. L-W will have a working familiarity with this cartridge. They can thread and long chamber the barrel so that your gunsmith just has to shorten the tenon and barrel junction to arrive at the headspace. That saves the cost of a new reamer. Magazines and bottom metal are available through Blackburn or Sunnyhill. With a stock of your choice and a good trigger, you're all set. The stock will require some inletting for the magazine.
