    Do I have to enter black powder rifles in my bound book...and do I have to do the 4473 on them? ...specifically a Thompson Encore 209X50 Magnum. It is my understanding that regular BP rifles/pistols do not have to be entered and a background check does not have to be performed, but this particular rifle has the capability to accept modern rifle barrels.?.? Thanks

    About 4 years ago I bought a new Izhmash Ural 6-1 barreled action at a gun show for around $350US. The action on this rifle is MASSIVE with a large bolt with 3 locking lugs. It is a challenge to bed as the underside of the action has ribs the full length. The loading port is so tiny that it is very difficult to push a shell directly into the chamber, fortunatly it feeds very well when you simply toss a shell into the port.
    The barrel is obviously hammer forged and is 25-26" long. It does not have a standard dovetail for scope so you will need to D&T if you plan to use a scope. It has a very simple designed, crisp, light (-1.5oz) trigger.
    If you are planning to put the rifle in a BR stock you will find that the trigger assembly hangs down about 1/2 more than a typical rifle and I was forced the build up the top of the stock by 1/2" to get it to look right. I bedded the rifle in an old blem stock from McMillan that was originally inletted for a LH Rem 700.

    I sold the rifle shortly after building it because I was unhappy with how it shot. Recently I ran into the guy I sold it to at the range and he let me shoot it again. With a good lot of Lapua L on my 1 pc rest the rifle shot incredible...2 ARA targets 2000+ in the wind and grouped easily in the 1's...similar to a Suhl I guess it needed some aging or something.
