M1 Garand Handguard removal

I just got an M1 Garand from the CMP and want to refinish the stock. How do I remove the handguards? Also does anyone know what the stamp P in a square and an eagle with some stars above are from? Thanks

  The P is a proof mark. The eagle and stars is a DOD acceptance stamp.

  Will have to send later when I have my camera available. Wood has some dings and is greasy, metal finish is 90%+ but is that Greek blue (got a Greek Service Grade HRA before they ran out). Overall very nice. Shows to have been built in late 54. Almost all parts are HRA.

  But, even with the tool, the handguards often split. You may first want to try cleaning up all the wood with diluted tung oil, then rubbing with 0000 steel wool.
