38-55 Front Sight...

Anybody have an opinion on best front sight choices for a Win. 94 38-55 W/26" brl.....It has a midrange tang peep rear already. Hunting....Cowboy Action?

    Hmmm... that mid-range tang peep is a real odd sight to find on an original Model 1894/94 Sporting Rifle (I assume that you are referring to an older original Model 94?).

    True Mid-range (both vernier & graduated) tang peep sights are normally found on the Model 1885 Single Shot, and they are usually accompanied by a Winchester windgauge globe front sight (sometimes with a spirit level). In the absence of a globe sight, a Beech Combination front sight was most often used. On rare occasion, other types of front sights were used with a mid-range tang peep sight, but I would be highly suspicous of it until I could carefully inspect it (or letter it through the Cody Firearms Museum)

    Are you absolutely sure that it is an actual mid-range tang peep sight, and not the more common Lyman tang peep sight? Can you post a picture of the sight?

    Bert beat me too it, I like the Beech Combination front sight. Works well with the peep sight, buckhorn, or leaf sight.

    Bert is THE expert on Winchesters, make no mistake.
    You are indeed lucky to have an old .38-55. If I were you, I would put the original sights back on the gun and use it and enjoy it forever. It may be the best "under 100 yard" caliber ever made, is very friendly to the shoulder and kilt my first deer.
    Wish I still had mine. Mine had the original front sight, whatever it was, and a Marble's rear, just an "open sight."
    That's all you need, as this is NOT a long-range weapon.

    Thanks for the input guys......It's a custom built late model 1894 and not a collector (unlike the one I shot as a weee lad)...The tang sight is a Pedersoli mid-range. I'm not familiar with the "Beech" sight you have mentioned but will look around. Any supplier(s) that come to mind? Is the Beech a tunnel sight? like the Lyman 17?
    BTW I'm looking for a XTR grade (checkered) stock set (oct. barrel, straight tang)....

    Hello Grunt,

    OK, that clears things up quite a bit. What you do want is a Beech Combination front sight. Carmen Axtel (the owner of Axtel Rifle Company) is an acquaintance of mine (she has a table at each of the Big Reno Gunshows, and my table is next to hers), and her company makes 100% perfect reproductions of the original Beech Combination sights.     In addition to the gold washed/plated Beech, she also offers them in Blued finish.

    Well, at least you are on the road to recovery (admitting that you are old & blind[:D]).

    No, that sight is mounted properly (but it is not original to that rifle... somebody put it on after the fact). The Beech Combination sights were designed to fold-down towards the muzzle, which raises the blade portion of the sight for use. That Lyman No. 52 rear tang sight on it is worth some decent $$$ too[:p].

    I'm looking at the curve of the blade sight, it's backwards. The Lyman is what 1st caught my eye, wouldn't mind having that!

    Yes, it is curved the opposite direction from the Beech sights found on a Winchester, but it is correct for that Marlin. The blade section of the sight is a physical part of the ring... if you were to drive out the retaining pin and turn it around, the sight would have to fold towards the breech to raise the blade.
