High Standard - Collector's Guide
Opinion on best publication -- is it Tom Dance's "High Standard: A Collector's Guide to the Hamden & Hartford Target Pistols"?

Only if you are interested or only interested in the Hamden and Hartford target pistols. I use the Petty and Spacek books, or just ask Bobski. Nothing covers everything High Standard built. 0 -

There are several books on High Standard. None cover the entire time frame of High Standard. Burr Leyson's and Charlie Petty's books are best for the early years 1932 through about 1950. Tom Dance's and Jim Spacek's books cover the later years beginning about 1950 and continuing through the closing about mid 1984. Note that Petty's book was the only one supported by factory research and that Leyson's was sort of checked by the sales department under Donovan at the time. THe other books were done after the factory had closed.
Spacek did three books but only one is readily available from his website at http://www.tm-techmark.com/jspacek.htm . Petty's has been reprinted twice but never updated. Dance's has been reprinted at least once but not updated. Each of Spacek's was ether an update or an upgrade with additional data.

Note that a Jim Spacek's serial number vs date shipped is much better than the corresponding data in Dance's Book. Dance's book is 14 years old and Spacek's most recent is 7 years old. New data comes to light all the time and so some things we thought we knew are nolonger true. All gun research is a work inprogress and the best a book can hope to do is describe what is known at the time of the book's publication.

I do recall you giving me some individual detailed info on a question about 'fluted barrel' production (High Standard factory or left-over sell-off) that was great. Sooo, where are you going when you are such a repository of unique information...
