I am considering the purchase of a 7mm as a backup rifle to my .270 Weatherby Mag. I notice that there are several variations to the 7mm (ie: 7mm Remington, 7mm WSM and 7mm Remington Ultra Mag). What are the differences? I think the 7mm RUM would probably be similar to my .270 Weatherby. I hunt big game in Colorado at ranges over 200 yards. 7mm has a wide variety of bullet types and weights to chooose from unlike the .270.

I am considering the purchase of a Sako Hunter. Are there any models of the Sako I should stay away from? I have been told the the 1970's Garcia models should be avoided. How would I know the differences?

    have a weatherby 7mm bolt action,says vanguard made in japan.Was wondering the price on this gun.It is in very good shape.THANK YOU

    A SAKO hunter would be an ideal choice. Consider the all weather variety. Good luck with your acquisition.

    the wsm and remington are similar. The RUM is considerably more powerful than all including your weatherby

    I have to say I like your choice of caliber due to ballistics. The 7mm line-up has a lot of bullets to choose from.
    If it were me I would purchase the new 7WSM. It has the power of a 7 Rem Mag with less powder. If you reload you note also that the 7WSM headspaces on the shoulder. The 7 Rem Mag headspaces on the belt way at the back of the case. I think that leads to better accuracy. Also, if you reload something to watch for with belted cases is separation of the case right in front of the belt after a few reloads. That being said the 7 Rem Mag can be extremely accurate when reloaded properly.
    The 7 RUM is too powerful for me to justify. I prefer ballistic ability of a bullet to more power. -Good luck with your choice there will be a lot of good opinions to follow I'm sure.

    Ballistics don't lie. You my friend are in the market for a 7mm R.U.M! Unless you might consider the 300 R.U.M?! *lol*

    The down side to the 7mm ultra mag is there is only one factory bullet to choose from thats the 140 grn core lokt ultra. Very fast and pretty accurate muzzle speed, looks like 3400 ft/ps with a 300 yard energy of about 2200 f pounds. Not to mention very flat 500 yard drop looks like about 27 inches.(down side) finding ammo can be tuff in some more remote locations and the recoil is pretty strong,,however I have added a break to mine and it shoots very well. I reload my own and have found it shoots 160 gr much better. I have hunted in Colorado for many years and have always been very successful with my remington 7mm shooting a 160 grn nosler. I like them both and own both. Truth is you cant go wrong with either,,but be prepared for slim bullet selection. As far Brand,,,I think Sako makes a excellent production rifle as does remington. I also think going with an all weather rifle makes great sense.[:)]

    I have the 7mm ultra Mag in the Sako 75 stainless Synthetic. EXCELLENT rifle. Easily the smoothest rifle I have ever handled. The ammo is hard to find but if you look around you can find it. The Sako 75's in the 7mm Ultra, 7mm STW and 300 Ultra are all discontinued and there are very good buys on these if you look for them. I paid $700 for mine and that came with the free Burris landmark spotting scope.
    Ballistically the 7mm Ultra is very accurate along with being fast. The Sako promises a 1" moa.
