Electric Pen = Matching ?

I received a milsurp gun a while back, and have always accepted that with these type of transactions you can get a little less or a little more than you expected...no matter how the items are represented.

I would like some opinions on something.

Who would consider a gun as 'matching' , when one of the parts had been numbered as an electro-pen job ? Possibly re-numbered.

The original machine markings in the area showed where some abrasive/polish work had been done and a 'matching' number E-penciled on.

Actually, a little more polishing, and no E-pen work would have been better....that is what I will now do with this piece before I give it away at Christmas.

    If all numbered parts do not match, it is not matching, just as you think. for a shooter this would not bother me, but If described as matching it was misdescribed. Hope you did not pay a "collector" price.

    some recent imports (m-44 rifles) originaly had the ser. #'s marked on the barrel and had to be remarked on the receiver to be importable.

    You'll find that many/most of the recently offered K98 Mausers have been advertised as "All Matching" have had their bolts electric pen "matched". This was done by the Russians themselves years ago when they went through them. The distributors and the importers are referring to them as either "forced matched" or simply "matching". So if someone advertised one as matching when it in fact had been electric pen matched on the bolt, may have simply been repeating what they were told at the time they bought it in the first place. That doesn't make it "actually" matching, but some people selling these guns may not be sharp enough to know what was or wasn't correct and original.
    I'm not saying they weren't in the wrong, but just that they may not have known any better. As a potential collectable "All Matching" means a lot. If they don't know what "All Matching" actually means, they need to become educated before selling something and advertising with that designation. The term "Forced Matched" or "Electric Pen Matched" would be more appropriate.

    The question is really meaningless unless gotstolefrom tells us the specific gun he is asking about.

    So, the only correct answer is, "It depends."

    For nmeyers - Accross the top of the bolt of an SKS, by the stripper clip slot. I'm not out bucks here, and don't want to point blame, just feedback.

    For you all....thanks for your opinions and feedback.
    It's a gift for my nephew at Christmas. I want to give him 'his gun', not one out of the safe. I knew I would at least have to do some cosmetic work. It would not bother me if there was not evidence of a previous number...I would rather have that than a crappy looking pen job.

    Well, again, you have to be specific. What kind of SKS?

    Yugos & Russian SKSs were sometimes forced-matched with electro-pencil at an arsenal. Most Chinese SKSs are newly made commercial rifles, so this problem probably won't exist. I don't know about Albanians.

    I am not sure the best way to handle the feedback. If he's willing to do what I would do (offer you a refund plus shipping both ways), maybe you wouldn't want to leave bad feedback. If he is, you don't have to ACCEPT his offer. Did you get good photos before the sale?

    I had never considered negative feedback, in fact the feedback has BEEN posted, and the transaction was executed with patience on both our parts....I left good feedback. The photo was of the 'typical' type and would not have revealed anything.

    Like I said, I expect with milsurp 'shooters' sometimes you get more, sometimes less. I just wanted some feedback and info...and that is what I got...and why I like this forum. I try to stay studied up on the guns that interest me, and some of those I can afford to buy.

    The piece IS A YUGO, but I had never picked up on arsenal electo-pen work. I have some armory re-furb 'forced numbered pieces' but they were stamped, not e-penned. My error in expecting that an arsenal would stamp.
