Question on SKS clips, ammo
Today I put a down payment on a Romanian SKS rifle at my local gun shop. I'm looking forward to going out and plinking with it. However, the while gun store owner has ammo for it, he didn't carry any clips. So before I order some online, I'd appreciate some advice on getting clips:
Do all SKS clips fit/work on all versions of the SKS?
I don't mind paying more for quality stuff, as long as it works.
Should I get extra clips? Do they bend or deform easily?
Do I have to worry about how to carry loaded clips? Do I need special pouches, or will most belt/shoulder ammo bags be ok?
Finally, He sells 20 SKS non-corrisive rounds for $5 a box--Seems like a great price to me.I can't reload them for cheaper. However, could I do better buying in larger quanities from a larger gun shop? (I live in the boonies.)

You can get 7.62x39 ammo from places like Ammoman and J&G Sales a lot cheaper than $5/20rds. Detachable clips on SKS rifles are a mixed bag. Most folks hate em with a passion and for good reason, they're hard to load into the rifle and they have a 'duckbill' on them that precludes putting them in mag pouches. If you get a detachable mag, look for 'USA' brand mags. They're harder to find but they tend to work best. I bought up a bunch of 20,30 and 37 round USA mags years ago and they have worked 100% in all my SKS rifles, I've also gotten a few cheapos that took a lot of fitting and still didn't work well. If you have any questions after you get everything you can drop me an e-mail and I'll fly you through the install and fitting if needed. The stripper clips work well too, you can find 20rd fixed mags that Norinco made for the SKS that work well and take the detachable mag out of the equation. I have a few SKS's that have the factory mag but most run a detachable, they work good for me

I don't plan to put a larger mag on my SKS, but my interest is pique.
If you put a NON-detachable 20 round magon a SKS, how do you load it?
With 20 round stripper clips? I'm not trying to be sarcastic---Please excuse my ignorance on this.
Also, is a muzzle brake on a sks a worthwhile option? Is so, any recommendations? I want to be careful not to get a lot of accessories that really don't add any significant improvement to the rifle

Anyhoo, avoid the SKS detachable magazines like they are the plague. Very few of them ever work, and they only work after a lot of tweaking on the rifle and magazine. I already played that game. Won't do it again. Unless you can find somebody to modify it to take standard AK magazines and actually WORK!
As for accessories go, a muzzle brake is pretty worthless on a SKS in my opinion. The recoil is so light in this rifle that your $20 is better spent in ammo. I wouldn't bother with optics either, just my opinion. And don't bother with those reciever covers with the built on scope mounts. The reciever cover is usually a little bit loose on just about any SKS and this makes it impossible to sight in a scope with any degree of certainty passed 50 yards because it wiggles around each time you shoot. The best accessory you could possibly purchase for an AK or SKS would be the sight adjustment tools.
New ammo I am able to find in my area goes for roughly $120/500rds. Surplus mil ammo usually goes for slightly less in my area.

You load it with two 10rd stripper clips. The muzzlebrake isn't really important IMO, the recoil from the 7.62 Soviet round isn't very hard anyways. The only SKS's I have brakes on are my SKS-M rifles that have bipods and 75rd drums. I welded in an AK74 brake to reduce some movement of the gun during rapid fire. It cuts the recoil a bit.

If you get a military origional SKS you already got a shell extractor in the rifle. Just use the cleaning rod to knock it out. [:D]

For broken shells they have a tool that makes extraction easier, but I've never had a broken casing in an AK or SKS. Probably not something you need to rush out and buy

For ammo, find a dealer who will order you Wolf 7.62 X 39 by the 1,000 round case. It's not reloadable but the .223, 9 mm, and .45 Wolf I use works well in military semi-autos. I can't imagine the 7.62 X 39 would not work similarly, and it's about as cheap as you'll find. And the down side to muzzle brakes is they increase muzzle blast. 0 -

A note on stripper clips: There are two different grades of stripper clips. Look for the "High Quality" stripper clips.
The lower quality provides you with about one out of four that works smoothly.
