MYSTERY Garand
hi i recently aquired a m1 garand. the stock is modified almost everywhere you look. it has a removeable magazine, and stripper clip guide. the front hand grip is not wood-it looks like bakelite. the only numbers on it is "19841" on the left side of the reciever toward the rear, and "C.A.I. ST.ALB.VT. M14 S/A SPORTER 308 CHINA" on the barrel near the muzzle. it DOES NOT have 7.62 NATO or whatever on the barrel by the op rod. i did not take it apart because i am not familiar with Garands and i couldn't find anything like it on the internet. check out the pics. comments much appreciated. --joe

if its marked M14, its not a garand. garands were 30-06. sounds like a chineese M14/M1A clone import to me.

It's an M14 copy, made in China, and imported by Century Arms International of St. Albans, VT.
Century Arms imported a large assortment of various foreign military surplus rifles and pistols, and later, various copies and clones of more modern military weapons such as G-3s, FALs, CETMEs, AKs, M-1 Carbines, etc.0 -

$1,300.00 Norinco China M-14 Rifle .308 Cal marked M-14 with serial number on rear receiver. Completely original, exc. cond in and out. With Minor stock nicks.

No Mystery: Its the 7.62 NATO Type 57 Rifle
The Chinese Nationalist manufactured a copy of the U.S. M-14 Rifle called the Type 57 (1968) This Rifle varies only in minor details from the U.S. made rifle.The most noticable differance is the shape of the Stock immediately behind the Reciever. The Chinese made rifle has a more pronounced flat surface immediatel behind the Reciever than does the U.S. made Rifle... Your Rifle is an import and has probably been Sporterized by cutting down the Magazine to hold only 4 Rounds...

Here in Kansas, the Norinco and Polytech M14/S rifles can be bought for around $500 to $700 depending on condition and how many Chicom parts were replaced with US made parts. In fact, if there was a lot of work done to it by a Smith like Smith Enterprises, it may be worth over $1,000 or more. They are a good basis for building a nice rifle, with a good receiver, but the bolt and other parts may need to be replaced to bring them up to US standards. In Canada, they are available for about $400 still today, but US import laws will not allow the import of those drifting to Canada. A couple of years ago (yes, really two years ago) I kick myself for not having $400 when a guy was walking around with one at the Wichita, Kansas gunshow that had USGI bolt, Op Rod, etc. replaced.
