300 wetherby mag vs. 300 ultra mag
I was wondering which gun would be better for long range shots with the flatter, most knockdown power,etc.. The Weatherby 300 mag. or a rem 300 ultra mag.???[?]

As they are factory loaded, the two are nearly equal. The edge IMHO would go to the Weatherby for having Norma manufactured ammo.
When it comes to handloading, the remington edges out the Weatherby pretty easily due to its larger case capacity.

If handloaded to it's true potential,..the 300RUM will flat out walk the dog all day long as the range gets further. The use of the very slow powders and heavy bullets from a RUM will send a whole lot of energy down range[8D] If you want LONG range performance, use heavier bullets and slower powders,..and the RUM will excell once bullets hit 210gr's and above. Mine runs 216's at 3200fps (30" tube).
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

Thanks for the replies. I load all my own stuff, and I was hoping the 300UM was the choice. I can buy 2 RUM's for the price of a weatherby(I'm left handed). For the price difference I can afford to buy a GOOD scope to put on my soon-to-be Rem. Thanks again.[:D] 0 -
Had a customer buy a 300 rum. Took 4 head of big game that fall. (one shot kills) Sold his two other hunting rifles. Said her wkould never use anything else. Very good round for long rang hunting and target. IMHO 0 -
After being "schooled" on the Weatherby calibers and their freebore concept, I'll never own one. Go with the RUM

Depending on what, when, and where, in the event you need to get ammunition, on a more practical side, I would chose something where I would have a better chance of buying ammunition in a pinch. 300 Wby can also shoot 300 H&H.

Remington factory loads for all the RUM's are pretty sedate, but handloading can exploit their true potential and they will meet or exceed any other factory cartridge in class, and most wildcats. The .375 RUM and .378 Wthby mag are virtually identicle, but the RUM is much less expensive. I know several people who jumped on the .300 RUM for 100 yd/meter competition and are very pleased. It will outclass the wthby by more than 100 FPS with the heavier bullets.

Looking at the weatherby and the 300 ultra I would pick the 300 ultra over the weatherby. I do my own reloading, weatherby brass is pretty pricey and remington looks more in line. Not to mention shooting a 180grn nosler out of bouth looks pretty close but you get about 150 more ft per second out of the muzzle.
Oh yeah watch this!!0 -
for factory ammo remington factory 300 RUM vs 300 weatherby factory ammo the weatherby made ammo beats it hans down.

You mean the NORMA manufactured brass that weatherby BUYS[?] Or the IMR7828 powder they use? Or the bullets they buy to load from nosler and barnes?
The only thing weatherby ammo has over most others is the NORMA manufactured brass.[8]

I meant that store bought weatherby brand rifle ammo in 300 weatherby magnum will outperform remington brand ammo in 300 rum anyday.
