The fastest commercial cartridge can be of several different types. The following is a list of cartridges that will all top out at 4000 fps and above.

Approximately, 4000 fps is the upper boundary for sporting rifle cartridges due to several internal and external ballistic limitations such as brass, powder capacity, primer constuction, bullet construction, and short barrel life. All these factors are the practical limitations for a high velocity rifle cartridge.

Add to the list of Surekill the 6mm Remington Magnum (244 Remington), 243 Winchester, 243 WSM, and 225 Winchester. The 6mm will churn up about 4115 fps. The Swift as mentioned by Surekill is one of the fastest with published velocities in the 4400 fps range.

If the proprietary cartridges are included add the 6.17 Lazzeroni Flash at 4150 fps and the 6.53 Lazzeroni Scramjet and 6.71 Lazzeroni Blackbird. The 7.82 Lazzeroni Warbird will even top out at 4000 fps.

There are probably some wildcats that will equal or slightly exceed the above velocities.

    Heavyiron

    P.S.

Forgot the 22-250 Remington. It is capable of 4100 fps.

I was surprised to see a .30 cal or greater in the list. I knew the 7.82 Lazzeroni Warbird was quick, but DANG. What is the bullet grain of the round that goes that fast? My .300 winmag only hovers around 3000 fps.

Yeah, the Lazzeroni's are a hot number! I have just about all the Lazzeroni's cartridges in my collection and they are not especially cheap but cheaper than most of the British big game cartridges.

The 7.82 Warbird is published at 4000 fps launching a 130 bullet. This combination will generate up to 4620 ft-lbs of energy. Not too bad.

Lazzeroni's rifle and cartridge are all designed with the purpose of legitimately taking game out to 500 yards, if you can shoot that good. The rifle and cartridge will do it. This is a versatile cartridge and can take bullets up to 200 grains. The 180 grain bullet will travel at about 3550 fps and generate 5040 ft-lbs of energy. This combination exceeds the maximum energy generated by the Winchester 458 Magnum.

This is a lot rifle and performance. The 130 grain bullet is probably adequate for every species in North America, while the 200 grain load is adequate for almost any game in the world.

I BELIEVE that the fastest factory loaded rifle cartridge goes to the Remington Acclerator in 30-06. This saboted load leaves a 30-06 at 4500+ fps. Yeah, surprised me too. Use the 308 version for ground hogs- and it IS impressive![8D]

Yes, the Accelerator is also fast. They can be difficult to find.

Remington did list them on their website but, I don't know if they are still there or not.

Velocity is listed at 4080 fps at the muzzle, so the Accelerator would also qualify.

the 22-243 middlestead apparently shoots over 5k fps with a 30 gr bullet. it is on the reloadersnest.com opening screen at 5278 fps. also the 22-250 ackley improved shoots according to the same site with a 35 gr berger. i don't know if i quite believe it, especially how accurate they say the loads are. the 22-243 was near 1/2" and the 22-250 was less than 1". i don't know if i believe it, but they put it on there. blows my mind.

There are many wildcat rounds above 4,000 fps. There is one called the 14-222. It shoots an 11 grain bullet 4,465 fps. No woodchuch on this planet will hear that report before the "red Mist" occurs.

I belive that the .264 factory loads in lighter bullet weights come in just over 4000fps.

Just remember there are no stupid questions, just stupid people asking questions.

But those are wildcats, not commercially available rounds.

22-250AI and the 220 Swift have the same case capacity, so when loaded the same they will yeild the same velocities (MV=volume x pressure).
As far as the 22-243 Middlestead goes, 4200 is more like what I'd expect (My load calculater program shows 4350 @ 60000psi, and when cranked to 75000psi limit you might get into the 4700fps range, and that's using a 30" barrel).
Powder has a maximum expansion velocity of approx 5000fps, and the projectle can not exceed that. In fact it can't even match it, as the powder dosn't reach it's maximum velocity until the bullet has left the barrel

It is better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

There are lots of wildcats that go very fast, and there are plenty of the bigger bore rounds that clock very fast with very light for caliber bullets that start very fast but usually lose velocity quickly are generally aren't very accurate for very far due to poor/low B.C.& sectional density. -- The Hornady #6 Reloading Manual lists the 223 Winchester Super Short Magnum(223 WSSM)as "the fastest, and quite possibly the homeliest, cartridge listed in this handbook." With a 26" bbl and a 40 grain V-Max bullet they were able to get 4600FPS with one powder, 4500fps with three powders, and 4400fps with six powders they tried. They also stated that they examined the throat of the bbl with a bore scope after approximately 350 rounds and the erosion was significant, and stated that "This cartridge is HARD on bbls." Their words, not mine..............[8D]
