Which Action..............

Browning, Remington, (something I haven't thought of?), would be best suited for use as the platform in building a "custom" semi-auto 25-06?
To clarify, I plan on buying the action, barrel of my choice and 'prolly kevlar/fiber stock/forearm , all separately.
Also, does it have to be an action that is 25-06 or will a 30-06 work without any further work? My thinking that as for the action/magazine those two calibers should be "interchangeable"?
Feel free to set me straight on ALL aspects of what I propose to do.

    Any long action, with a bolt face compatable with the case head of that Family of cartridges will be acceptable.25-06, 30-06, 270, 35 Whelen. Rest of family includes 243, 308, 7mm-08, 35 rem but these would run thru a short action

    Any semiauto currently chambered for a 30-06 should work. Pressures for the two cartridges run about the same so you shouldn't have problems with the operating system.

    We have the second amendment so that all the rest are secure....UNK>

    I'd use the BAR action,..but a semi-auto custom sounds like a tad past the point of diminishing returns.

    why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

    MIKE WISKEY: I had wondered if there is a reason that a Garand action would be a particularly good or bad selecton, provided I could find one in really good shape that wasn't attached to a really nice COMPLETE rifle. What's this about the gas port block?


    Justin,I realize I'd never get the kind of 1000m tack driver you demand out of the platform I'm proposing!*LOL*[8D] (When I do get ready to do THAT rifle I would hope to really HEAVILY on your expertise for it!?) I'm hoping to end up with a one-of-a-kind semi that looks and feels the way I want, and hopefully shoots better (for me) than something off the shelf, is all.

    So, is the concensus for using a B.A.R. action?

    yep,..as much as I rely on the rem700 bolt action,..I am saying Browning BAR all the way. Of the semi-auto's I have seen shot,..the BAR is a far more consistent rig. Have a trigger job done and a select match tube added, and you should be 1/2moa all day long even at 300yds.

    BTW, I am all for doing it "just because"[:D][8D] I have a few of those projects myself.[;)]

    THE REM. AND BROWNING AUTOS BLEED GAS OFF THE BARREL INTO A BLOCK THAT IS BRASED TO THE BARREL. THIS BLOCK MUST BE POSITIONED EXACTLY, THERE ISN'T MUCH CUSTOMISING DONE TO THESE ACTIONS SO NO (MANY) CUSTOM SMITHS ARE SET UP TO DO THIS. HOWEVER MANY ARE SET UP TO DO M-1'S, ALL THEY REQUIRE ARE SOME PRECISION THREADING AND DRILLING ONE GAS PORT. WITH ALL THE M-1'S FLOATING AROUND I WOULDN'T FEEL BAD ABOUT CUSTOMISING ONE, YOU CAN BUY A STOCKLESS ONE FROM THE CMP FOR <$300, SELL THE EXCESS PARTS (BARREL AND SIGHTS)AND HAVE YOUR ACTION FOR <$200.

    What about a FN-49 action. At least you don't have to use the enbloc clips like a garrand, rebarreling it would be easy compared to any other that has been mentioned. Just ream out the gas block and drill a new pin hole. Unlike the BAR, and the Garand, it uses a one piece stock, or do a 1/2 length stock and build a free float handguard like the one DSA uses on their match FALs.
