Crack Repair
Is there a link that can walk me through a proper " cracked stock and handguard repair"? I have an FN 49 with two cracks in the handguard starting at the front, from the rivets and one crack in the stock starting at the front. All about 3" long.
Any help would be appreciated.

how elaborate do you want to make it?
fiberglass resin works best with pins to hold it.
most cracks need to be drilled at the end to keep it from continuing.
ive seen wood dowels to brass pins. which way would you like to go?0 -
These are small cracks.
A buddy of mine just saw the post and called me.
He recommends Gorilla Glue. He said first wet
the inside of the crack with water, tape on
both sides of the crack. The glue foams and
it will fill every void it can find. The tape will
protect the handguard finish.
Then using a hypodermic needle, squirt some
Gorilla glue in the crack. Wrap it with some
latex surgical tubing. Follow the directions
for drying time. He said it will be stronger
than the wood was originally.
Ever hear of that? Whatcha think?

yes, that works good. it is used a lot in furniture repair as well. it has great expansion. since this isnt a fine shotgun we're working on, i wouldnt worry about finish if it expands outside the crack. you may want to also spend some time finding out what caused that crack in the first place.
though its called gorilla glue, in the old days, gorilla glue was refered to as neoprene adhesive F1. it was a rubber base that flexed. im going to assume the new glue coined the phrase and it isnt the same glue im thinking of.0 -

Regular super glue works well on handguards. I have a garand handguard that was repaired like this, and has lasted many rounds. I had my doubts, but tried it. It doesn't show at all either. 0 -
Gorilla Glue, It's not just for carpentry/woodworking anymore.
Don't you just love versatile products. I used Brownell's Acra-weld
to repair a loose handle on a 4 quart pressure cooker for my wife.[:D]
