cary gun for motorcyclist
ok, first let me apologize if i posted this in the wrong forum. i am an admitted newbie. my second apology is for asking such a broad question but i really don't have anyone to ask. there is only one gun shop in my area and there isn't anything to browse over or look at. i am looking for a good handgun to carry while on my motorcycle. i own a ruger p90dc but i don't like carrying it because it is so big. i guess my question is two fold. i have found some small deringer style .22 mags, does anyone really think a .22 mag is effective enough to carry? if not, what is a good caliber to consider? it is hard for me to simply look through a catelogue and see a gun and buy it. but without a local selection to look at i feel lost. that is why i am turning to the knowlege here. i am open for suggestions of any type. thank you very much.

I'd opt for a small .380 like a Keltec, a small 22mag is hard to control, they tend to have a lot of muzzle flip and little recoil.

A good friend of mine carries a S&W 640 357mag it has a 2in or 2 1/2in barrel on it and it really is a nice little gun. 0 -
Second the Kel Tec, and also throw in for consideration the Beretta Bobcat. Or If you want a little bigger there is also the Walther .380's or Bersa clones of the Walther. I agree with Kel-tec, inexpensive, reliable, and you can get the p-11 9mm which is smaller than most .380's and lighter too. However Kel-tecs .380 is the eppitemy of tiny, I just apt for a little more power. My p-90 can fit in my front pocket and go unnoticed all day.

The right carry gun is the same for everyone. It's the one you shoot well...meaning it's second nature to 50 yds,can control in rapid fire, can reload with out looking more than a glance and don't mind carrying all day. This will vary with the person, some prefering smaller guns and others like me have a preferance for larger types. I very often carry a Colt SAA and some times a 6.5 inch N Frame Smith or a 1911 which I don't mind toting. I generally carry them behind the back in a lined pouch rig I made myself. If I'm driving my truck they are on the seat beside me, covered. 0 -

Welcome to GB. For a semi automatic the .380 is the smallest I would consider and the 38spl in a revolver is the the smallest. 22mag is not even a consideration unless the other option is nothing at all. Do you plan on shooting from the Bike? Is it just a carry on the bike untill you stop? If small is what you are looking for there are alot of comact semi automatics in 9mm/40s7w as well as 45acp. My 2 cents [8D]

Small 1911 in .45 of course, but your real problem would be a good secure holster for what ever choice you make, don't skimp on a cheap holster 0 -

A 22mag out of a rifle is meaningful. Out of a three inch barrel it beats a sharp stick in the eye but not by much.
Forget a derringer. They'll fall out of your hand if you go for them in a hurry.
You will have to shoot the pistol with your left hand so a single action auto with right handed safety is out.
I'd say a J-Frame revolver or a Keltec would be right.
You can boost a Keltec P11-9mm to a 40S&W or 357SIG with a conversion slide. Look at both Keltec models and the light alloy S&Ws.0 -

..couldn't miss out puttin my 2 cents in the barrel. I ride and carry a 1911 always. Colt CCO or one of my commanders, also a small Springfield. Another easy one is a Colt Gov't in .380. my '77 Superglide doesn't mind the extra weight...

ok, just for clarification, i do not plan on shooting from the bike. i just want a pistol i can carry comfortably. i honestly don't ever plan on using it, but you know how that is. we never hope to use anything, but if the need arises...
i checked out a picture of a keltec .380 and that looks about right. its just so hard to order a gun you have never gotten to hold/shoot.
again, i appreciate all of your input. there is a big gun shop about 2 hours away, i might ride up there sunday with a list of your suggestions and see if i can check them out in person.
