.17 rimfire barrel length question
Hi, I'm thinking about converting to a .17 rimfire and am debating between 17mach2 and 17HMR. One of the barrels that I'm considering is only 20" and in 17HMR. So to those of you who are into this round is this way too short for this caliber or is 20" an ok length for it? My gut feeling is that 20" is better suited for the 17mach2. Also how much practical difference is there between the two rounds?

20" is fine for either round. Not enough powder being burned to need a long bbl.16"-18" will work ok too( or any length that is common on a 22LR). If your just shooting at targets and such the 17 mach2 is alot of fun but if you plan to shoot any small varmits I'd go with the 17hmr for the extra power (which is questionable even for the 17hmr in my opinion/experience). The hmr is a 22magnum necked to 17cal and the mach2 is a 22lr necked to 17cal. The 17hmr is alot faster, and both rounds are very accurate in a good gun........good luck.........[8D] 0 -

Ruger offers their 77/17 in 17 M2 with a 20-inch barrel.
Ruger offers their 77/17 in 17 HMR with either a 22 or 24 inch barrel.
Since both these catrdiges use powders that have relatively slow burning rates, I would think the 17 HMR might need a slightly longer barrel length than the 17 M2 to attain maximum velocity.
However, at the same time I don't believe a 20 inch barrel would sacrifice much in the way of velocity either. Other manufacturers are offering 17 HMR barrels in lengths anywhere from 18 inches to 24 inches.
