Are any commercial firearms really "engraved" such as cut or are they rolled, pressed and etched?

  There are firearms that come engraved by hand and not just stamped. You can check most of the gunmakers websites and there are people who do the engraving for the custom workshops of those manufacturers. Some of the higher grades of "off the shelf" firearms have what is known as CNC engraving, a relatively simple pattern that an computer controlled engraving maching can cut. They add a nice touch but nowhere near what some of the best engravers can do.
  So, to answer your question, I will say both. But, you are not going to get hand engraving without asking for it and paying a premuim. I will say the work that engravers can do is pretty amazing when it comes to turning a firearm into a working piece of art.

  Factory engraving, hand engraving that is, is a bargain in one sense. If long term investment is the goal, factory engraving can be a major positive attribute. Factory engraving is usually priced right. You can pay more or less and may get better engraving from an outside (non factory) engraver but 'factory engraved" is what sells in collector arms. High art engraving done by big name outside engravers can be a big exception but "high art" is a subject in itself that tends to separate from gun collecting.
