Rifle Accuracy with/without Machine Rest

It would be nice to know you have a rifle capable of shooting .001 inch groups but really what good is that if you can't shoot better than 2" yourself? Not stating that is the case but it seems to me that you must consider the amount of practice it takes to get the shooter to optimize their ability as well. Are there any practical rests available for accuracy testing as you describe? Would it have to have a mechanical device to move the trigger as well?

The Idea behnd bagging up a rifle or clamping it in a rest IS to eliminate human error as much as possible. It also allows the shooter to make fine adjustments and know that they will be correct.

However, this doesn't take into consideration the wind factor. I can think of two ways of eliminating that. Shoot at very short ranges i.e. like I zero at 25 yds. and use very precise measuring devices or shoot in a bunker/indoors where the wind has been eliminated. It is hard to get good accuracy until you know exactly where the rifle is shooting then you can start making adjustments for elevation, windage, temperature, and altitude as needed. But without a foundation of why the rifle shoots where it does you will continue to miss the mark when you go to make changes for the above mentioned. -good luck

yes they do make a syringe type hydraulic press that will squeeze the trigger for you. also i would rather know that the gun is dead on and that any miss would be my fault.

I'm not an expert, but i did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

rests that try to arrest recoil affect accuracy. The correct way to machine test a rifle is with a return-to-battery type rail system.

I can say without a doubt that my Bald Eagle mechanical rest and rear bags show better results than a bull bag. When properly adjusted to the rifle, consistency will improve.

why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

ArmCandy, You are correct in thinking that to find out how accurate any firearm is, would be to eliminate all human error, but like so many have said before, "what is the point"? A truly accurate rifle is only as accurate as the shooter that is pulling the trigger. If you want anything else, it is a waste of time, unless you are shooting in a purely mechanical shoot, and again, what is the point?

    Bigbarn,

To answer your question of why do all this, is to find the level of accuracy of a rifle, with as little human error as possible. That way you can determine the level of accuracy of the rifle. You can then troubleshoot unsatisfactory accuracy. Keeping in mind that different rifles have different criteria/levels of accuracy. Once you have established the best accuracy a rifle can give you can then work on yourself to improve your shooting ability.
In my earlier post I mentioned removing wind as a factor. If you are trying to get sub moa groups in a 5 to 10 knot gusting wind inside the x ring at 100 yds. It's nearly impossible to do unless you first establish a zero with wind removed so that you can then allow for wind change when shooting. If your rifle can hold a sub moa then you should be able to dope the wind. If you don't zero correctly you will be changing the scope back and forth trying to get the third or fifth bullet into the x-ring. That is the point of a mechanical rest. to first establish rifle accuracy and changes needed for that and then work on shooters ability. You can't improve your accuracy without an accurate rifle.
