T/C Encore problem

I have a Thompson Center encore rifle with a 26" heavy barrel. I have mounted a Weaver Grand Slam 4.5-14x40 scope using Leupold QRW rings on a Weaver #410 base. I have tried numerous factory as well as handloaded cartridges in this rifle and haven't been able to get good results at the range. My question is could the problem be with the way the scope is mounted, a problem with the barrell, or am I being too picky expecting smaller groups than 4" at 100 yds.? Would it be worth it to order an all steel base? Any suggestions you can offer will be appreciated. I think this rifle has potential and I enjoy shooting it and look forward to using it afield but, I would enjoy it more if I could get better results.

    I'm trying to swap out the grip on my T/C Encore for a full stock and I am having a problem getting a tight fit. It occurred to me that the stock draw bolt and the grip draw bolt might not be the same length. In any event, I can't seem to get a tight fit and the stock is loose. I am a little shy of over torquing the bolt as the first time I tried this the stock adapter snapped off the tang.

    One thing I did learn is that T/C customer service is among the best I've ever experienced.

    If after checking to make sure that the mounting system is very secure, and it still won't shoot, try a different scope that you know is working.
    If that don't work, contact TC, and you can be sure that they will help you out with the problem.
    4 inchs at 100 yards can be done with a sling shot ......and with a rifle 1 inch can be expected, maybe better, but that would depend on who's yanking on the trigger.

    Gun control is hitting what your aiming at.

    I agree with mrbruce check the base screws,,rings or change your scope.
    I can get 3 shot groups size of a dime with all my pistol barrels @ 100 yds.
    1 shot is all ya get so make it a " SUREKILL " (T/C Encore-/-Contender/ MATHEWS SWITCHBACK Shooter)

    Hey Bogen, No you aren't picky expecting better than 4" at 100yds. I found a website you need to look at. www.bellmtcs.com this is Mike Bellm, he is a noted TC man. Does custom work. They have a forum like this devoted to TC Contenders and Encores. They can help. Thanks Mac

    just had a friend of mine ask me this same question about an H&R rifle in 223 , he too was getting about 4-5 inch group at 100 off the brench and he is a good shot , he also had some one else shoot the gun, getting the same group size, Rifle had a new scope on it , mounts / rings all where new and put on right , guess what? it ended up being the scope was crap , we talked him into putting the scope on a rifle that he knew was a good shooter , and it did the same thing , groups opened right up, so put a different scope on the H&R and now its shooting sub 1" ,,,,
    let some one else shoot the gun , if you still get the same groups , put a different scope on the rifle or put that scope on a rifle that you know shoots good .. if the scope checks out ok look at the rings / mounts ,, if every thing checks at then send it back to T/C they will make it right
    oh makes sure that scope base is down tight , i had a contender barrel that the holes where not drill deep enough and you couldn't get the base down tight without shortening the screws
