ruger 1 vs bolt (.30-06)

looking to buy a new rifle for a hunting trip in .06
looked at a ruger 1 1b and some bolt actions remington 700,ruger 77.
i like the feel of the ruger 1,not sure if i should get the single shot.

    The #1 is a great rifle, and shorter and lighter than a bolt action. A quick second shot can be done with practice.

    Have you held the ones you are considering. I have a #1 and love the lighter but more solid feel. The action is also a finer fit. You feel and hear a fine crisp lock as the falling block goes to work. Mine is a 300. winmag. As was earlier mentioned a second shot is not that hard to make quickly. The barrel doesn't fall as with handi rifle so it is almost like a single shot lever action. Practice, practice and when you know you have it right, practice more.[:)]

    what model ruger 1 do you guys have?
    this is not would call light, model 1b with scope around 9lbs.

    Also nice about the ruger #1 is you can get a longer barell and still have an overall length the same or shorter than a bolt gun because of the much shorter action length of the #1. I have heard that some #1 like to have a bit of pressure on the barell at the forend to get the best accuracy. You can buy devices that insert into the forarm to give you adjustable amounts of pressure on the barell. I think Brownells has them.

    The 1a is under 8lbs with scope. If it looks like an ugly duckling with the barrel band and the front sight, I had those removed, and the stud for the sling installed in the forearm. I think the balance of the 1a is better.

    ruger 1 b is heaver than the 1a ,is it not ?

    Jumping jiminy. What are you guys talking about!?! The Ruger is a great shooting, beautiful rifle. It's also a pig. The 1-B is well over 8 pounds and the 1-A is close behind.

    Remington has a number of extremely accurate 700's well under 7 lbs.
    The Titanium 700 comes in at around 5 1/2 pounds in 7mm-08.

    I've been considering both for Antelope hunting. Love the looks of the Ruger, but when you start lugging that thing around, you'll be looking at mountain rifles. Save the Ruger for sitting in a stand.

    (although too light would not be fun shotting larger calibers[:(])

    When I bought my Ruger 77 in 257 Roberts I would have killed for a No.1 in that caliber, but they were unavailable. The feel of the single shot is fantastic my next center fire rifle will be a Ruger #1
