Case hardened receiver finish ??

Hi
I just picked up this Stevens Ideal 44. One side of the receiver is pitted and the swirl color is gone. The old owner must have had it laying down on the floor or agaist a damp wall. The other side of the rifle is perfect.

My question is, is there a way to get the swirled case color back or am I out of luck ??

    Its done by heating the part in charcoal IIRC, you'd probably need to find some smith that does that type of hardening

    Hello Pete,

    You are out of luck (unless you want to spend several hundred more $$$ on that rifle). Not just any old 'smith can recase color harden a gun properly... in fact, very very few of them can. There are several top notch outfits that can do it so that it looks like new... Doug Turnbull, Don Menk, and a few others that I am aware of, but none of then are cheap.

    Turnbull charges like $200 for just the LEVER, as I seem to recall from asking about having a Model 99 re-done! The guys are right, it won't be cheap!

    Thanks for the info....I was afraid of that. Yes it is in very nice shape. Bore is near mint. Only a very little pitting in the middle of the barrel. One side is truely mint, the other is mared a bit on the receiver and some blue loss on the barrel. It might be listed for sale shortly on Gunbroker. It is chambered in 25.20.

    I've had a number of guns re-cased. You have to remove the old finish and the pits. You may be able to do this yourself. It's a pretty flat sided receiver so they are a bit easier. Turnball does nice work but some guns he just won't do. he just did my Double Rifle receiver and that was 200. There is an outfit in Ohio...can't recall the name off hand, do a web search. they have done a number of lever gun and shotgun actions for me...they ran about 125. The Gunlist has a number of firms who color-case listed in Gunsmith services. To me, if you like the gun and are going to keep it...it's worth the money.

    Color Case Co. New Springfield, Oh. does a very nice job. They will only do the color not the pre-polish. You can do it yourself or have someone do it for you. Do not overpolish, you only want to go to a 320 grit finish or 400 at the most, some will argue only 220. If you do it yourself remember to do the rounded edges first and the flat surfaces last. Try wrapping a flat file with emery and wet filing. I use kerosene to keep it wet. Remember, you can't keep it to wet. In any case the phone number for Dan #330-542-2062.
